Chapter 30: The Ugly Duckling PART II
Mrs. Thompkins on the other hand who was at her desk, scanning through some papers, was humming a song to herself. I wondered what she was humming, but the thought quickly erased from my head as she came walking back towards me."Ashley, I forgot to give these papers to your Uncle, but do you think you can have him sign this tonight and you can bring it back to me for homework?", Mrs. Thompkins asked?
I nodded my head. "Yes ma'am."
I reached down to my book bag and pulled out a SpongeBob folder. I opened it and placed the papers inside where the one side was marked HOMEWORK. Uncle Pinhead had wrote that and said that he would always check my folder for homework and help me with it.
"Are you hungry Ashley? It's lunch time and I believe everyone is already outside for recess.", Mrs. Thompkins asked.
I nodded my head with a smile. "Yes ma'am."
I got up from my seat and followed Mrs. Thompkins out of the room. I followed her down the long hallway. We walked around the corner of the far end of the hallway and entered the doors of the cafeteria. There was about five grown ups who I assume were the teachers, sitting down together at a round table, talking anxiously among themselves. There was a few kids around my age sitting at a table, eating their lunch and making small talk.
I followed Mrs. Thompkins over towards the food counter. Behind there was two ladies dressed up in food uniforms with plastic caps over their heads. They looked at me and gave me a uncertain look. I didn't understand that, but without a word, they started fixing two trays of food. I notice the one lady put a burger each on the two trays while the other lady put french fries, lettuce and tomato and two packets each of mayonnaise and ketchup. The lunch lady handed Mrs. Thompkins her tray and then she handed mine. I replied with a thank you and followed behind Mrs. Thompkins. I followed Mrs. Thompkins over towards a lunch table where the kids were sitting at. There was three kids; two of them were boys and the other a girl.
They looked surprised when Mrs. Thompkins and I walked over towards them. They weren't really surprised at Mrs. Thompkins, they were surprised at me. Must be because I was the new kid.
"Samantha? Robbie? David? This here is Ashley, a new student joining our class. Do you think she could sit with you guys and eat her lunch?", Mrs. Thompkins asked the three students.
They all nodded their heads and turned to look at me. I gave a shy smile and turned to Mrs. Thompkins who was about to leave.
"Ashley, let me know if you need anything ok.", Mrs. Thompkins asked.
I nodded my head and noticed the one girl who was Samantha, scoot over to make room for me. I took a seat next to her and sat my tray down.
"Hi, I'm David.", the boy with brown sandy and brown eyes said to me. He sat across from me and extended out his hand.
"Hi, I'm Ashley.", I smiled, exchanging the handshake.
"Did you just get here?", the other boy asked.
I turned to him and nodded. "Yeah like ten minutes ago."
"Oh, cool.", he nodded. "By the way I'm Robbie.", he waved with a shy smile.
I smiled. "Nice to meet you Robbie, and your Samantha?", I asked, looking at the girl who sat beside me.
Samantha nodded. "Yeah, sorry.", she smiled. "Your in the same class as us right? In Mrs. Thompkins class?"
I nodded my head while eating a french fry. "Yeah, I think I'm sitting beside you in the back of the classroom."
Samantha's face brightened. "Really? That's good, at least I have somebody to talk to now and be partners with because David and Robbie here sit in the front of the class room."
The two boys laughed and gave Samantha goofy grins.
"It's not like were in another class Sam.", David replied.
"Yeah, but you guys never talk to me in class though, only at lunch and recess and that's it.", Sam protested.
I ate my food in silence and watched the three of them fuss back and forth. By the time they were done fussing, I was finished eating. I pushed my empty tray to the side and rested my elbows on the table.
"Do you guys outside for recess or no?", I asked.
Robbie was the one to speak up while Samantha and David both slouched in their seats from the argument.
"Not really. We're the only three that just stays in. We never go outside.", Robbie said.
I raised my eyebrow in confusion. "Why's that?"
Robbie gulped and shook his head. His cheeks were getting red from embarrassment. I didn't understand what was so embarrassing, but I soon found out.
Just then, the bell rang and kids were rushing inside.
"Alright everyone! Line up outside the cafeteria.", a elderly man said, getting up from the teachers table and dumping in his tray.
I turned to the others. David was collecting al the trays. I told him thank you for taking my tray and he nodded.
"Come on Ash.", Samantha said, getting up from her chair.
I got up, tucked my chair in and followed Samantha. I followed close behind her as kids were piling in. I didn't want to get separated from her. I was just about to follow her out the cafeteria doors until a hand grabbed my arm and pushed me out the way.
"Watch it! You see me coming through here!", yelled a girl with long wavy, blonde hair and blue eyes. Her face was red from anger. She shoved me out her way and walked out the door behind Samantha. The girl who pushed me looked over her shoulder and at me. Two girls who looked similar to her (they must be her sisters), snickered at me and followed the girl out the cafeteria. I was confused at what happened and why that girl pushed me.
About ten pairs of eyes were starring at me wide eyes. Half were girls and the other half were boys. The girls were looking at me and whispering things in the other person's ear. Like I cared. I went to proceed to walk out the door until I heard someone calling my name.
"Ash!"
I spun around and I saw Glen running over towards me. He stopped in front of me, trying to catch his breath.
"Hey, where were you earlier?"
"Forget about that, are you ok?", he asked, reaching for my arm.
He raised my arm out to see the red dig marks in my skin from where the girl grabbed and pushed me.
I nodded my head. "Yeah, I'm ok."
"You remember what Uncle Jason said, something bad happened to either me or you, he will come out here.", Glen warned.
I snatched my arm away from Glen and nodded. "Yeah I know, but I didn't do anything wrong! The girl pushed me when I was walking. It ain't my fault. I tell you one thing, if she pushes me one more time I'mma punch her in the face."
With that said, I left Glen dumbfounded and walked out the cafeteria. Luckily, I caught a glimpse of Robbie and David and walked over to them. Robbie was the first one to spot me.
"Hey are you ok?", he asked.
I nodded. Great, they too saw what happened.
"Hey, don't let destiny get the best of you. She's that way with everybody here.", Robbie said with David nodding in agreement.
Destiny, so that was the girl's name. I didn't know what Destiny's problem was, but her problem was going to be solved soon enough if she pushed me again.
"Yeah well, I'm not really going to worry about it.", I said, trying to sound confident. "But, where is Samantha?"
"Here I am!", said a voice form behind me.
I turned around and there was Samantha with a goofy smile.
"Hey where were you? I thought you were behind me?", Sam asked.
I nodded. "I was, but-"
"But she got pushed out the way by Destiny.", Robbie cut in.
Samantha turned to look at him and then at me. I nodded my head in agreement, admitting that he told the truth.
"Are you ok?", Samantha asked.
I nodded. "Yeah, all she did was pushed me, nothing major.", I replied.
"Push you? Destiny doesn't really push new kids at school unless they disagree to be her friend.", Samantha said.
"No matter what, I will never be friends with her. She's too mean and stupid looking.", I said.
David, Robbie and Samantha laughed at what I said. I laughed along and then Mrs. Thompkins came over and told us to get in line with the rest the rest of the class. From what I noticed, Destiny was in Mrs. Thompkins class also. Great, today was going to be a long day. Hopefully she wasn't close to me in class. At least I had Samantha with me to talk to and to keep my mind off of Destiny.
I got in line and stood behind Robbie who was behind David and Samantha stood behind me.
"Hey Ashley.", I heard Samantha whisper.
I looked over my shoulder and raised my eyebrow in response.
"If Destiny bothers you again, you should tell Mrs. Thompkins; Mrs. Thompkins will take care of it because she did before when this girl Bella was having problems with her.", she responded.
"Bella?", I questioned.
"She was a transfer here not too long ago. She only stayed here for a couple weeks and then moved again."
"Oh.", was all I managed to say. Then Destiny came into my mind. "What did Destiny do to her?"
Before Samantha could respond, the line began to move. The line was following Mrs. Thompkins as she lead us back to the classroom. Everyone was rushing in the room to take their seats. I took my seat in the back where Mrs. Thompkins showed me. Samantha came over and took a seat beside me. I was so glad I had met someone who I hope was my friend.
Samantha reached under her desk and pulled out a Barbie cover spiral notebook along with a pink fuzzy pencil.
"Samantha?", I asked.
She turned to face me. "Yeah?"
"What did Destiny do to Bella?", I whispered.
Samantha scooted close to me and lowered her head so only I could hear what she was saying.
"Destiny pushed Bella down the stairs in GYM. We have a stage in GYM and like, Bella, was going to get some water from the water fountain and that was when Destiny came over and pushed her. Bella broke her arm from that and has to go to the hospital to get a cask. When Bella came back, that made Destiny mad and Destiny beat the crap out of her."
"Just for coming back?", I asked.
Samantha nodded. "Yeah, because Destiny, when she does something bad to you, she expects you to leave and not come back. She did that before to two other girls before Bella."
"What did she do to the other girls?"
Samantha shrugged and let out a sigh. "I wasn't here at the time when Destiny did something to them two girls. I just heard it from the others. I got here last year in 3rd grade. You kind of think Destiny is just an ordinary bully, but she's so much more than that; she's evil. I watched and learned about her from 3rd grade up until now."
With that said, just then, I heard a door shut and Mrs. Thompkins began to speak. She told us to take out our social studies books and we would began our lesson.
Since I didn't have a book, I turned and watch Samantha as she took out hers and opened it to the previous lesson.
"Here you go Ashley.", Mrs. Thompkins said, handing me a book.
I was surprised as I didn't even hear her walk over to me. I took the book and gave her a smile in response. I opened up my book and scanned through the pages. I saw a bunch of old people. Some were men and some were woman. They were all dressed in different clothes from what other people wore today. Some men that I saw were red button down jackets along with white pants tucked in their black boots. The held rifles in their hands and were pointing them at other men. It must of been some kind of war back in the day.
Suddenly I felt something hit me. I looked down in front of me at a paper ball. I heard a few laughs and snickers. I looked up and saw no other than Destiny. She was smirking and then she mouthed the words, 'Read It'.
I gave her a stern look and then slowly, unscramble the paper. I starred at it and read: "Ugly Duckling" and I suppose to picture of a stick figure of a girl with long hair, big eyes with big teeth was a picture of me. Cute.
I balled the paper back up and tossed it to the side on the floor. Luckily, Mrs. Thompkins didn't see this since her back was turned on the class. She was scribbling something on the chalk board with the headline that said: Notes.
"Ashley?", I heard Samantha whisper.
I turned to her and she gave me a worried face.
"What was that?", she asked in a low tone.
I shrugged my shoulders. "Trash I guess."
Samantha gave a me dumbfounded look, but I just ignored her and took out my notebook and pen and began to take down the notes. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Destiny starring at me and whispering things to her friends.
I didn't care though. I wasn't scared of Destiny. I feel sorry for the people that are though. A picture began to form inside my head as I thought of the things of what my family would do to Destiny if they saw how she was treating me. I pictured what Uncle Freddy would do. He probably would plays games and toy with her mind so she can get scared and cry like the baby I knew she was. Then Uncle Pinhead would take his chains and hang her up from the ceiling with her skin pulled from the hooks. She would be screaming and crying in pain and begging for mercy. That would be the funny part, and I would just be there to watch and laugh in her face.
Just then, another paper ball hit me, and then another. I was getting irritated by the moment and I waited for Mrs. Thompkins to turn around. When she did, I raised my hand. Luckily, she saw my hand and smiled.
"Yes Ashley?", Mrs. Thompkins asked.
"I'm sorry, but may I please go to the restroom?", I asked politely.
Mrs. Thompkins nodded and waved me over. With all eyes on me, I stood up from my seat and walked over towards the door. Mrs. Thompkins gave me a pink mark with the words: BATHROOM PASS written over it.
"Thank you ma'am.", I told her politely.
She opened the door for me and I walked out.
"You do know where the restrooms are right Ashley?", Mrs. Thompkins asked.
"Yes ma'am.", I called over my shoulder. I started walking out slow and taking my time, but when I heard the door shut, I was rushing to the bathroom. The hallways were clear and as I past several classrooms, I can hear the teacher inside lecturing to his or her students. Thankfully, I found the girl's restroom which was located on the opposite side of the cafeteria. I pushed open the door and walked in. There was three stalls and I took the last one. I locked the door and pressed my back against the door. I let out a sigh and slid to the floor. I covered my face in my hands. I rubbed my temples and let out a few breaths. I had to gain and get myself together.
I felt anger flowing in me and I didn't want to explode out in the open in front of the others. I didn't want this girl to get to me. She wasn't worth fighting, nor was she worth killing. She was just a stupid kid who just wanted to cause mischief, yeah that's it. She just wanted to cause mischief.
I slumped on th floor and spread my legs out to stretch them. I decided that I would sit here for another three minutes to relax and then go back to class. I lifted my head up and rested my head back against the door. I let out a sigh and shut my eyes. For some reason, I felt tired. I didn't understand why or how, but I was.
Just then, I heard a door open. It was the restroom door and then I heard footsteps walk in. I looked underneath and saw a pair of pink converses. They walked over towards my stall and stopped. Whoever it was, knocked on the door, not a nice knock either, a hard knock.
"Get out the restroom now!", I heard a girl yell. I didn't have to ask who that was, I already knew: Destiny.
I sighed. I wasn't in the mood to argue with this girl. I stood up on my feet and unlocked the door. She moved out the way as I pushed the door open wide. She stood there with an angry expression on her face. I didn't understand what she was so angry about. What was her problem anyways and picking on people that didn't do nothing to her.
"That's what I thought. Now, perhaps you didn't read my last message, why did you come here? And who the hell are you?", Destiny snarled.
I rolled my eyes at her patheticness. Suddenly Destiny was in my face, calling me names. I pushed her away from me. I shouldn't have done that because now, she was punching me. She punched me in my stomach first. I clutched my stomach and let out a groan of pain. Then, Destiny punched me in the face causing me to fall back. Pain shot throughout my entire face and I felt my jaw begin to swell. I was lying on the fall, curled into a ball as I let Destiny continue to punch me. She punched me in the side of my face, my head, my chest, my arm and my stomach continuously.
"Your going to regret you ever pushed me!", Destiny yelled in my ear.
I tried kicking and pushing Destiny away, but she was a lot stronger than I was. She pushed me into the wall and kicked me in my stomach. I didn't realize how hard she kicked me until I started coughing up blood. Seeing my own blood being coughed up made me cry. Tears were streaming down my face and I let out a whimper. Just then, I heard a door open and heavy footsteps began walking in. I thought maybe it was Mrs. Thompkins or another teacher walking in who heard all of the commotion, but it was someone else. I heard Destiny let out a scream and I looked over to see a pair of muddy boots. I scanned my eyes up on the person and when I realized who it was, I felt a lump form in my throat. It was my father.
My dad wasn't in his human form, he was his normal self. He wore his dark green, worn-out jacket along with a black shirt and black pants. His hockey mask was dirty from the dirt that covered it. I couldn't see my dad's one eye. The eye holes in the mask was pitched black and made it look like my dad was eyeless.
"Daddy?", I whispered. Then I coughed up more blood. The blood spilled on my dad's right shoe. I notice my dad took a step back and then the sound of Destiny crying sounded in my ears. I looked over to her as she starred in horror at my dad. My dad was starring at her also. I noticed that my dad didn't have his machete with him. How was he going to kill is he didn't have his machete?
My dad looked from Destiny and then back at me. He lowered himself down a little bit and extended his arms out to me. I crawled slowly over to him while clutching my stomach. My dad picked me up gently and without a word, he carried me out of the bathroom. Destiny's cries were fading as my dad carried me away and headed towards the front. Glen, surprisingly, waited by the door with his book bag in hand. He saw me and worry spread over his face.
"You ok Ash?", Glen asked.
I nodded my head. "Yeah"
I coughed again and blood flew from my mouth. Glen made a disgusted face at me and followed close behind my dad as my dad carried me over towards the parking lot. My dad carried me over towards a truck. It was a four door truck and on the inside, I can see Uncle Michael in the driver's seat with his white mask on. Glen rushed ahead of dad and me, and opened the back door. Glen opened the door wide and moved to the side so my dad can lay me in. My dad sat me on the seat without a word. I coughed again, but this time, no blood came out. I scooted over to the other side behind Uncle Michael.
My dad lifted Glen in the seat beside me and shut the door. Glen turned to me.
"Are you ok Ashley?", he asked.
I nodded. "Yeah, how did dad and Uncle Mike find out?"
"I told them. Like Uncle Jason said earlier, if we were in trouble, he wouldn't be far away. So, when everyone went back to class, I snuck out and went back outside to scream for Uncle Jason. Then, that's when Uncle Jason came. He was waiting in the parking lot with the buses and cars. I told him that you were in trouble and that's when he came and got you. Uncle Michael, I called him up to come and get us so we have a ride home and wouldn't have to walk.", Glen said.
I nodded my head, taking it all in. My dad was in the car already and him and Uncle Michael were exchanging a look. Uncle Michael looked back at me in the review mirror. I could see his blue crystal eyes through the eyes holes. There was sincere in them and I wondered if he was trying to ask me if I was ok.
My dad did the same, except I couldn't see his one eye. My dad was starring at me. Everyone was starring at me. I actually didn't know if they were actually starring at me or the blood that was running from my mouth and staining my white shirt.
I sighed. "I'm o.k, I guess. Thanks for coming to get my dad.".
I gave my dad a reassuring smile and then I turned to Glen. "Thanks Glen for going to get my dad and Uncle Michael."
Glen gave me a nod and without a word, Uncle Michael started up the engine and drove everyone home that afternoon.
