Chapter 29: Bad News
It was still morning when Uncle Jeepers Creepers flown me back home. He dropped me off on the front porch. I slid off his back and regained my posture. I straightened out my clothes and took out Glen's IPod from my back pocket. I turned to face Uncle J.C. with a smile."Thank's Uncle J.C. thanks for everything.", I told him.
Uncle Jeepers Creepers huffed in response and then flew off. I watch him dissapear beyond the trees and without a word, I opened the door and walked inside the house. Warmth spread over my body and the smell of homemade cooking filled my nostrils. I heard the sound of the tv going and people talking. I walked into the living room to see Glen sitting in the room all alone. I smiled at him.
"What cha' doing?", I asked him.
"About to play F.E.A.R. Do you wanna play?", he asked, getting out the XBOX controllers.
"What's F.E.A.R?", I asked.
"A scary game that deals with shooting. You get to create you own character and shoot and kill these ugly looking creatures.", Glen replied.
"Oh.", was all I could day. I handed Glen his IPod which he took and put in his pocket. Without a word, he handed me a controller and turned the game on. I guess I had no choice, but to play. I took a seat on the floor next to Glen and watched the tv screen as it went from black, to a red screen. Then, the screen went back to black and the words, F.E.A.R. appeared across the screen. They were written in the color red and then, the menu screen appeared.
Glen went first and created his character. His avatar name was YoungBlood. His avatar looked exactly like him, except for the brown eyes his avatar had. Glen picked the type of gun he wanted and once he was done, it was then my turn. I picked an female avatar and dressed her up, gave her the name Princess, and picked out my gun. Once the easy stuff was done and out of the way, the game began.
"Alright Ash, time for the real fun. Now, when you see anything strange activity, shoot.", Glen warned.
I glued my eyes to the screen and nodded. I watched wih wide eyes as I moved my character slowly in the room that I was in. It was dark and I was thankful that I was provided with a flashlight. Just then, a some what little girl with blood covered all over her face came out. I gasped and looked at Glen.
"Shoot her?", I ask.
Glen nodded. "Kill her."
I worked my control and shot the girl four times. She fell onto the floor dead. I smiled at my accomplishment. One down, who's next?
Glen and I continued to play the game for an hour or so until we got tired. I put my control back in the drawer and got up and went to go sit in the recliner. I sighed.
"What a game.", I said.
Glen shut the game off and looked back at me with a grin. "Did you like it?"
I shrugged. "It was alright, scary though."
Glen laughed and walked over and took a seat on the couch. He crossed his arms behind his head and leaned back. "So?", Glen said. "You don't want your dad to leave for the honeymoon then huh?"
I shook my head and rested my head back. I didn't really feel like talking about my dad leaving. It was only going to upset me more if I talked about it. I wonder what my dad and Mary were going to do while they were gone? I mean, what was so great about Hawaii that they have to travel all the way over there for an honeymoon? I mean really, what was so special about Hawaii?
"You shouldn't worry about it Ash, I mean Uncle Jason is only going to be gone for a week tops, am I right?", Glen said.
"I don't want to be far away from my dad Glen. I never been far away from my father before, and I don't want this to be the first.", I responded.
Glen gave me a sympathetic look and turned away. He turned the tv back on and flipped through the channels. He stopped at one channel in particular; SCIFI. I wasn't in the mood for watching tv, so I stood up and walked out of the room. I was about to walk upstairs until I heard some laughter coming from the office room. I raised an eyebrow, wondering who could be in there. I walked towards the office room and luckily, the door was open. I peeked inside the room and saw Mary and May on the computer. I looked at the comuter and saw what looked like Wedding Dresses.
"Oh my gosh! I love this one! That one would look beautiful on you hun.", May squealed to her sister Mary as she pointed at one of the dresses.
I rolled my eyes at the display and walked away. I didn't want to hear any thing about the wedding until the day came. I sighed to myself and walked back towards the stairs. Before I walked up them, I thought abou getting something to drink and maybe a snack to eat for the while. I probably was going to be stuck in my room all day, bored. I made my way into the kitchen and walked to the cupboards. I opened one and peered inside. There was a box of cereal, gornola bars, and fruit roll ups that Aunt Esther had bought last weekened. I took one of the fruit rolls up and put it in my pocket.
"Hungry I see huh child?", said a voice.
I spun around and saw Uncle Pinhead standing there in the doorway. I nodded my head. I walked to another cupboard and pulled out a glass. I poured myself a glass of juice. I took a small sip and felt Uncle Pinhead watching me. I turned to look at him.
"Is there something wrong?", I asked.
Uncle Pinhead shook his head. "Not that I know of. You were awfully quiet this morning. You just came and ate your breakfest in silence. That's very unlikey of you, don't you think?"
"I wasn't feeling well.", I lied.
Uncle Pinhead starred at me for a moment and then let out a chuckle. "I think I know you better than that dear child. Something is troubiling you; I can sense it."
Damn Uncle Pinhead. He knew me so well, I wish he didn't though. Great, now I had to explain myself to him, but how could I tell Uncle Pinhead? Maybe I could think it out loud to him. Maybe he would see and visualize what's wrong. Uncle Pinhead was another person I could talk too in the family. He was good at listeing and he provided very good advice. Maybe he could give me advice on what I can do while my dad goes away on his honeymoon.
"Would you like to take a walk and talk about it?", Uncle Pinhead suggested.
I thought about it for a minute and nodded. It was better to talk about what was on my mind then here. Uncle Pinhead nodded and lead the way towards the back door and outside. I followed directly behind him. Once we were outside, we started walking towards the woods. Uncle Pinhead and I walked side by side each other. Once we got to an opening part of the woods, we both came to a stop.
"Alright, now tell me what is troubiling you child.", Uncle Pinhead demanded.
"It's Mary and my father." I sighed.
"What about them?"
"It's that damn honeymoon.", I groaned. I crossed my arms over my chest and pouted like a little kid would do.
"What's so wrong about that?" Uncle Pinhead seemed shocked to hear this. He acted as if he couldn't believe I said it. But it was the truth. Well, it wasn't ainly the honeymoon, it was the fact that my dad was leaving. Didn't he not know he had me? For some reason, I felt tears come to my eyes. I tried to hold them back, but couldn't. The thought of my dad leaving me echoed in my mind. Uncle Pinhead must of heard my thought as his face relaxed a little. I felt a lump in my throat form and suddenly felt myself falling on my knees. That was then and there, I broke down. I let the the tears escape and fall freely. I let out breath and tried to regain myself. I wrapped my arms around myself and squeezed my eyes shut. I tried pushing the thought away to the back of my mind, but it just stayed there. It was repeating in my mind. Why did my father have to go out and meet Mary in the first place?
"Ashley...", Uncle Pinhead whispered. Then suddenly, I felt a pair of arms wrap around me. Uncle Pinhead was hugging me close and rubbing my back to soothe me. I cried into his shoulder as I just let my thoughts flow.
My dad leaving me.
My dad leaving me.
My dad is leaving me.
Please don't let my dad leave me.
Uncle Pinhead, who must of heard this, continued to rub my back. "Ashley, your father isn't permenetly leaving you. He's only going to be gone for one week. It might be different around the house without your dad being there, but you still got me and the others with you."
After hearing this, I felt my body begin to calm. My tears fell siletly and I just stood there, resting my head on Uncle Pinhead's shoulder, looking off into the woods. I began to think about what was going to happen while my dad was going away. What was I going to do? What was the whole family going to do? Was it all going to be the same as everyday or no?
"I promise you Ashley, nothing will change, except for one thing.", Uncle Pinhead sighed.
This caught my attention. I slowly detached myself from Uncle Pinhead and looked him in the eyes. "What do you mean one thing?"
I rubbed my eyes with my arm and sat there just starring at Uncle Pinhead. He raised his hand to my head and just sat it there. He lightly stroked my hair. He let out a sigh and said, "I didn't want to say anything until the whole family sat down to tell you and Glen both at the same time."
"Tell me what?", I began to worry now.
"Ashley, you and Glen will be attending school soon and-"
That was all I needed to hear. Just one simple little word was all I needed to hear and now I found myself running back towards the house. My tears came back. I wasn't crying because I was sad, I was crying because I was angry.
