Mary-Sue - The Ultimate Guide

Mary-Sue - The Ultimate Guide

Based on every advice ever given, I believe I have conjured the ultimate guide to follow when creating an OC for any fandom, as Mary-Sue's exist everywhere. (There is still more to come, so don't panic if there is something left out. That just means it will be in a future chapter coming soon.)

Flawless Beauty

You all KNEW I had to talk about this!
No Mary-Sue is complete without their astounding appearance that makes EVERYBODY fall head over heels for them!
Agh...
Ladies, no girl is perfect. Especially not naturally. I don't care what these Mary-Sues say, it's NOT possible!

The part that bugs me off about the looks is how the people describe them.
Some can get away with this because it's their writing style, and they like to describe things around them, and how people look.
But if it's not your style, then GIRL WHO YOU TRYING TO FOOL?!
Come on, stick with your own writing style. If you describe them too much and it usually isn't how you describe them, it is an instant sign that your character is a Mary-Sue.

Another thing we should talk about.
Right now, I want you to picture a Mary-Sue in your head.
Focus on their looks, and note it down.

+++

Got it?
Okay.
Now let's compare.
Did your Mary-Sue vision have any of the following:

Naturally beautiful hair?
A rainbow colour palette used at least once?
Big chest?
Slim body weight?
Natural beauty without the need for make-up?
Wears make-up (anyway)?
(Close to) An hourglass figure?
Revealing clothes?

If you only answered yes to a couple of these, it's good to give your character beauty, but don't overdo it. Even if it's a little bit of beauty, it's still good.
If you answered yes to at least 4 of these (at least half), you tried way too hard in beauty.
However, answering yes to the little things like wearing make-up and having beautiful hair is usually okay.
Just as long as your make-up doesn't make you look like a plastic Barbie doll, and your hair isn't styled too much.
For example, I plan to soon release a new Sonic OC called Erika. Erika has a crush on a male OC I made named Alistair. The two are friends for now and like to hang out, but when Erika does hang out with Alistair, she usually puts on a bit of foundation, lip gloss, and mascara, and styles her hair in loose, wavy curls.
Foundation, lip gloss, and mascara is a good mixture of make-up when keeping simple. You only ever put on the whole package at special occasions such as weddings, engagement parties, and big birthday celebrations.
The loose wavy curls is usually Erika's preferred hair style when going out, but she doesn't overdo it unless it's, again, a special occasion. Around the house when she's by herself, she'd just put her hair in a side braid that hangs over her shoulder. This is okay, since it proves that Erika never has natural flowing hair, and has to style it herself.
And how to wake up with hair on a morning?
Think like Anna's hair from Frozen, on Elsa's coronation.
Or Merida's big wavy messy locks in Brave.
Now those are natural.

Disney - Showing how REAL hair looks using the modern princesses.

(I'll probably make a part 2 for flawless beauty, since there is a LOT to talk about when it comes to this.)

Question:

What if for appearence, they have some of those attributes but make those realistic?

Such as, for females, they have huge breasts but when fighting it's a disadvantage, or, in general, they DISPISE them?
reply
Big breasts can be natural, or through plastic surgery, which is realistic. And it would hold them back, yes.
I suppose I do need to talk about appearances more.

Yep. Mary-Sue's aren't fun. At all. But hey, having blood relations to a canon character i.e a sibling to Sasuke, doesn't necessarily mean your character is a Mary-Sue or Gary Stu either. There are some pretty good non-Mary sue stories where this occurs. But that's beside the point. Anyways, other Mary-Sue traits include....Having multiple love interests, a perfect See More
reply
True, but I will be separately talking about them too. I'm not resting until this guide is complete.

Fair enough~ :) (Long time no chat, by the way.)

lol ok so since I know your little message at the top was about me

I'm not on anything. its all a matter of opinion that you can't understand, that's why it was on the "unpopular OPINIONS" page

I just think having an of related to a canon character is cringy but here you are, freaking out again because maria wanted to get pissy about it

I'm pretty sure you weren't the first to say it, hence why I said it wasn't to you.
