No hope living here
Surge says that Negro would be by town now, although whether he’s going to enter the town or not is unsure, so the five go back to staying in the inn. Drawings are getting too annoying, they’re starting to hurt. They set out the next day instead. Surge isn’t at his station. They carry on walking a little more. Negro is standing but Surge is standing right next to him too, hands in his pockets with the lazy grin he always has. The girls clutch their fists.
“So they really did come,” Negro says. Sapphire lowers their head with the realization that Surge might have ratted out on them. The group glare at him, he just shrugs. Negro kills them easily once again. They wake up in the inn again. Everyone gets up and groans, except Sapphire. She rolls over and goes back to sleep.
There’s no use asking Surge about Negro, since the information is doubtful, but since Surge speaks, Sapphire listens anyway. It would be rude not to. They all glare at the demonic hedgehog this time however and he seems happy about that. Yet before they leave, Sapphire says thank you again. Surge’s fists clench.
“Hey.” The group frowns. Surge hops off his seat and steps out of his station. The group turns to face him. His face is set in a deep scowl, head tilted downward so that his eyes are shadowed. He pushes past the group until he reaches Sapphire. She just stares at him.
“What’s your deal, huh?” he asks, “What’s with the sugary-sweet shtick you’ve got going on?” Sapphire frowns deeper in confusion. “Do you think you can just get out of here by being good to everyone?” black knifes appear out of thin air behind Surge. Sapphire knows what’s going to happen next. She takes a step back, but black magic wraps around her ankles, working its way up to her body until Sapphire is lifted up the air. Crap.
“Sapph!” The group screams. Sapphire pushes against the magic trying to wedge herself free, but its solid.
“Or are you trying to let us think you’re good?” Surge asks, “And then, at the last moment, you kill us when we’re most vulnerable?” Jackie reaches out her hand to her friend.
“No!” Sapphire tips forward and reaches down to grasp Jackie’s hand. Surge raises his other hand and the girls are coated in his magic in one second and thrown onto the trunk of a pine tree the next. Sapphire gasps in horror, “Guys!”
“Let me tell you, darlin’, if that’s what you’re aiming for, then that’s not going to work,” Surge moves his hand again and the knives behind him pose towards Sapphire. “And if it’s the other way around; didn’t anybody ever tell you?” the knives all flew towards the blue hedgehog. Sapphire screws her eyes shut.
“There’s no hope LIVING here.”
She shoots out of the bed screaming bloody murder. A large drawing of a forget me not is scribbled on her cheek.
“Sapph!” Maria is the first to make her way over to the bed. The blue hedgehog puts their hands to their mouth, hunching over as she sobs.
“Sapph, it’s okay now,” Maria says, “We’re back–”
“It’s not okay!” Sapphire yells, throwing her hands down onto the bed, making the foam jump with the effort of the slap, “It was never okay. I…I – ” She takes in a shaky breath and exhales in short huffs, “I learnt to never kill anoyone and now i'm questioning and-” she wipes her tears furiously. “I’m confused,” they say, “And I don’t know what to do.” Maria pats her back and sighs.
“Me too, Sapph.”
