Routines
The group march down the same path to Surge's station again. Surge looks bored as always, but Sapphire was suspicious. They let the conversation go as usual, and of course, say thank you. When she does Jackie, Crimson, Maria and Calista all freeze. Surge flinches. His eyes flicker to Sapphire's face, the flower at her cheek and then to the group who’s now glowering at him.“What?” he asks harshly.
“Thank you,” Sapphire repeats, and then everyone turns to continue on their journey, never looking back.
They walk into Negro again and Sapphire doesn't feel so good, her eye sight isn't the best anymore either. They does once again and she goes back to the station. Surge isn’t looking at her. He’s staring at the ground instead, looking deep in thought and troubled.
“Pub?” Sapphire offers.
“Y-yeah. Sure.” Surge is caught off guard for once. She had left the others at the inn today. She knew they wouldn't let her go to Surge in the first place but she feels that there's something about him. She might just be missing her Surge from Mobius or she could be going insane, but all she knew is that she had to do this. She had woken up earlier then her friends this time and rushed out before they could wake. Surge looked distracted the whole way to the restaurant. He doesn’t say anything. Sapphire notes that he hasn’t used pet names in a while either. They order chips again. Sapphire hands Surge a bottle of water and he passes her the lemonade. She thanks the waiter and he once again looks happy.
“Where're your friends?” Surge asks.
“At the inn.” He hums, “You still there, staying for good?” Sapphire shakes her head no.
“I'm still going home.” Surge sighs, “You’re really set on that, aren’t you?” It takes a while before Sapphire answers. A sad smile creeps on her face as they take a drag of lemonade.
“Seems the only thing I know how to do anymore" Surges eyes trail back to the bar and he hums, Sapphire thinks Surge understands.
When the group set out and they end up running into Negro and Surge again. The battle starts. Soon enough Sapphire is the only one left standing, an odd occurrence as she was usually the first to die. Sapphire yelps and dodges the attacks until they got tired. During this entire thing, Surge stands and watches at the side. He watches as the blue hedgehog doesn’t give him that hateful look she did when she first experienced this, and how she cry out to their fallen friends, and how his partner breaks her with his attacks. Sapphire is panting, red blood dripping from her mouth. The hedgehogs heart is struggling, pulsing weakly.
“Help,” She rasps, looking up. For a brief moment, her eyes flicker to Surge. “Please.” Negro calls up another attack and stabs her straight through the chest.
It becomes a pattern for the next few runs. They group goes out, finds Surge, they talk, the others are getting used to Surge now and talk to him as if he hasn't killed them multiple times now, they walk down the path and then they meet Negro and Surge. Sometimes they almost get past, sometimes they get killed straight away. All the same Negro kills them, Surge watches. Always watches. The right side of Sapphire's neck and cheek are already covered in forget me nots. She still has countless more then the others. Sometimes Surge greets them, sometimes he looks deep in thought and on those days, Sapphire offers to take him to the pub and stops by the inn to let the others rest there.
“Why’d you offer?” Surge asks her on one occasion, when the flowers have covered her left palm and leave only the fingers peeking out.
“You looked sad,” Sapphire admits. He frowns,
"What’s it to you?”
“Dunno,” Sapphire shrugs, “Wanted to help.” Surge gives them a strange look. Sapphire giggles.
