Small acts of kindness matter
Normal POVThey notice the huge boulder at the side of the path and scurry to hide there when Negro approaches. Thankfully, Surge doesn’t give their location away, distracting his partner until he leaves, fuming from the lack of work Surge had seemed to be doing. Sapphire peeks out, giving Surge an expression that’s confused and angry at the same time. Surge shrugs.
“Do you think he’ll be back?” Calista asks.
"Probably" Crimson sighs.
Surge waits for them to step out of their hiding place.
"Heh, guess you got lucky,” he says.
“You mentioned a town before?” Jackie points to the way ahead.
Surge nods,
"Yeah?"
"Where is it?" Sapphire asks
"Want me to take you there?" Sapphire takes a step back. The demon hedgehog laughs. He walks and the group follows, two paces behind him in case they have to run. Miraculously, there’s no need for that, since soon, they come across a set of small and big houses. Surge spreads his arms out. “Welcome,” he says, “Negro's not usually here, so I guess you’ll have some time to rest for a while.” Sapphire nods as they look at the inn a few ways off.
“Thank you,” she murmurs, then scowls before saying, “Why are you helping?”
“Helping?” Surge raises an eyebrow.
“Nah, darlin', you’re helping yourself. I’m just watching from the sidelines and letting it happen. Plus, I get to see Negro loosing his cool" She may be imagining it, but Sapphire thinks there’s an undercurrent of bitterness in Surges’ voice. The demon hedgehog gives one wave for goodbye before he continues on ahead. Sapphire stares at his retreating form.
"Hey, Sapph, did you hear? We decided staying in the inn would be the safest place for now" Jackie says tugging on Sapphires arm. So they make their way to the inn. It was time for a good night’s sleep.
Leaving the inn the group trudge on until they're at the other side of town. A little while away is Surge sat at a sentry station. Calista is the first to notice him and she takes a step back.
"I don't trust him" she whispers. "We shouldn't trust him"
"We shouldn't trust anybody here" Crimson agrees nodding. Jackie and Maria state their approval but Sapphire, however, stays silent. Her attention is focused on the forest green hedgehog.
"Sapphire" Maria says sternly. "I know what your thinking, but this isn't the same hedgehog you fell in love with in Mobius!"
"I know! I know, it's just...I still feel like there's something there" Her gaze drifts back to him and it seems he had already noticed the group. His pupils landed on Sapphire and a ghost of a smile forms on his muzzle. He waves her over. She looks back at her friends. "He might know where we have to go to next" she says and wonders over to him.
Chin in one hand as he leans over the edge of the station.
“Didn’t think you’d be up for going this far,” he says. Sapphire shrugs. He chuckles. “Thought you’d want to stay in the town is all. You know: warmth, safety, food. Negro only goes there every now and then and if you’re lucky, you’ll never run into him.” Sapphire shakes her head.
"I still want to go home" Surge stares at her for a few seconds before shaking his own head,
"You’re really set on that, huh?” His golden orbs flicker to the drawings of flowers that are covering one side of her head and he hums. “There’s a lot of obsticals ahead,” he says, “Negro set them up." Sapphire nods and turns to her friends who are staring at the two.
"We keep on going forward" she announces. They nod and continue. The blue hedgehog smiles at them before she turns back to Surge.
"Thank you,” they incline their head downward slightly, before catching up to the others. The last thing she sees of Surge before they go is his mildly surprised look, and the last she hears is his tiny laugh and the words
“Nobody’s ever said that before.”
