Prom... It's Here
"Oh my God. It's here... It's actually here. I mean, I knew it was soon, I just didnt realize it was this soon, ya know?" I told Teresa as she did my makeup."Hold still," she mumbled.
"Sorry," I held my head straight as she applied some eyeliner.
"Okay," she said, "All done."
I opened my eyes and saw my reflection. "Wow." I said, "This looks amazing."
"I told you the eye shadow wasnt too dark," Teresa smiled.
"Thanks," I said.
"No problem," Teresa replied.
"No, I mean for everything," I explained. "For taking me in, for helping me, supporting me... Thanks."
Teresa pulled me out of my chair, bringing me into a air restricting hug. "You're my sister, I would do anything for you."
We stood there for awhile, until I pushed her away. "Okay, no messing up my hair," I warned.
"God, you look amazing," Teresa smiled again.
My dress was strapless black, floorlength, with a shimmering fabric that made it resemble the night sky. My hair hung in loose curls, my make up was "smoky" as Teresa said.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
"Oh my God," I whispered.
"He's here," Teresa pushed past me to get the door.
I checked myself in the mirror one last time, making sure everything was in order.
"Okay," I told myself. "Here goes nothing."
As I started down the stairs, I could hear Lucas and Thomas talking. I stepped into their veiw, and all conversation stopped.
Lucas smiled, making my heart soar. "Wow," he said quietly.
"Wow is right," Thomas said, wrapping an arm around Teresa.
I finally got to the bottom of the stairs, Lucas rushing to me, corsage in hand.
"This is for you," he grinned. I watched as he slid it on my wrist. "You look beautiful. God, you're gorgeous," his expression went sad.
"Is everything okay?" I asked.
He nodded, smile returning.
"Pictures!" Teresa announced.
Me and Lucas posed for what seemed like a million photos before she finally let us leave.
"Are you ready?" Lucas asked, opening the passenger side door for me.
"No, but let's go," I was about to get in but stopped. I leaned in and gave Lucas a quick kiss.
"What was that for?" Lucas asked, smiling.
"Am I not allowed to kiss my boyfriend?" I teased.
He cringed, but before I could ask why, he kissed me again. "Okay, let's go."
When we arrived, most of the people had already shown up. The gym was completely made over, silver, black, and red balloons littered the floor. Tables were set up with center pieces of the Eiffel Tower. The lighting was dark, the music was loud. It was perfect.
"You want to dance?" I asked Lucas.
Lucas didn't even glance in my direction. I could tell he was looking for someone, but who?
"Lucas?" I asked.
"Hm?" He jumped a bit.
"Are you okay?" He was starting to worry me.
"Oh, yeah, totally," Lucas said faster than I could follow. "You wanna drink or something?"
"Uh, yeah sure," I grabbed his shoulder as he turned towards the punch table. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I'm fine, totally fine," he leaned in and kissed my forehead. "Okay, I'll be back soon."
"Okay," I bit my lip. Something was definitely up. Maybe... Maybe he was just as nervous as I was. It was possible that he was going to tell me he loved me too. That would be great.
He returned, handing me my punch. "Here you go."
"Thanks," I took a sip. "Tastes kind of funny," I said.
"Hmm?" Lucas asked. "Drink up."
What the hell was wrong with him?
I took a few more sips. "Is this spiked?" I asked, tasting a hint of alcohol.
Lucas shrugged. "Maybe, I can't tell. Let's dance."
He led me to the dance floor, leaving our cups on a nearby table. We dance for a couple songs when I suddenly started feeling dizzy. Must be nerves.
A slow song came on, Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran, and I knew it was time. I was going to tell Lucas I loved him to the perfect song.
"Lucas," I whispered into his ear.
"Yeah?"
I tugged him away from the dance floor, outside, and under the tall oak tree in front of the school.
"W-what are we doing out here?" Lucas asked, nervously.
"I wanted to tell you something," I said. I could faintly hear Ed singing in the background. But, everything was slowly fading out.
His eyes went wide. "What?"
"Umm. I lo-"
"Don't say it," Lucas squeezed his eye shut.
My vision went blurry. "You don't know what I'm about to say." My legs felt like jello. What was going on? This wasnt just nerves. I couldn't think straight.
"Kasey?" Lucas asked, taking me in his arms.
I regained my balance, wrapping my arms around Lucas's neck.
"Lucas, I love you," I said before I could stop myself.
Instead of the happy, excited face I had imagined, I received one of pain. "No," he buried his face in my neck.
"What?" I asked, everything was slipping away.
"You can't," Lucas whispered.
"Lucas, I don't feel good," I muttered. I didnt care that he didnt love me at the moment, everything was a blur. I needed help.
"Kasey?"
The last thing I saw before everything went black was the frightened face of Lucas.
