Chapter 2
“Ya know, you're supposed to reply to your elders when ‘e speak.” Shardloss said as he filed his metal talon, which he knew I hated. I hate it because it makes the worst noises. He smirked when he saw me wincing.
“Sorry, OLD MAN.” I said.
“ ‘Ey, ah didn’t mean it like ‘dat.” He said, his smirk replaced with a mad frown. Uh oh, he’s getting serious, I thought to myself.
Shardloss walked in closer to me and with not a hint of mischief in his eyes he had begun to speak.
“There’s somthin’ I wanna ask ya, and it’ll decide your future.” He looked me straight in the eyes, his a chocolate brown, mine pure black like the darkest of nights, without stars or the moon. “Do you believe in *Glaux?”
I opened and closed my beak, and in a whisper I uttered one word, “No.”
Shardloss immediately swiped his wing across my head and sent me tumbling to the floor.
“WHAT!” He screeched in the most horrible, gut wrenching scream I had ever heard. I quickly regained myself and dashed out of the classroom hollow as fast as I could, to the safety of crowds, of owls.
“YOU LITTLE *****! YOU ARE WORSE THAN A ******!” Shardloss screeched after me as I ran as fast as I could. When I reached the Great Hollow I beat my wings and flew into the rafters. I wilfed to half my size and glanced down. Shardloss ran through the great hollow, with a stream of curses issuing from his beak.
“Oh… Oh dear…” I whispered to myself. “This is not good, NOT GOOD! Shardloss is going to kill me!” It was only when I heard the wing beats of Sofia, my best friend, that I opened my eyes.
