Before The Reaping
Hello. This is the story of the twenty-fifth Hunger Games, which I was fortunate enough to get picked for. I don't know if anyone will ever read this, but I must write it to get my feelings out. My name is Alice Green. A nice, normal name. I live in a part of District 12 nicknamed the Seam. I have no siblings, and I don't have a father. When I was five, something bad happened in the mine. Mum never told me what. So, now I'll begin my story. The day of the reaping. When I woke up, I was more nervous than I could possibly imagine. The odds were not in my favour, I thought. I had signed up for tesserae far too many times. But I knew no one would volunteer. Then I thought of something. Oh no. The First Quarter Quell. What would they do? Oh no oh no. Would there be four tributes instead of two? Would the winners have to replay? If it was that, then I would be fine. I was only fourteen. Some how, I must have fallen back asleep. Because the next thing I remember is Mum shaking me awake.
"Alice? It's time to get up." I woke up immediately, remembering what the day was.
"Alice, would you like to wear this blue dress?" I nodded. I had to look nice. I had breakfast, if you could call it that. A slice of the tesserae bread. After I had finished that and got dressed, we left. Get there early, get good places.
I left Mum, and walked to stand near the front, but not that near, that was for the twelve year olds. After a long wait, Effie Trinket and President Snow walk up onto the stage-like thing. President Snow pulled out an envelope.
"Now" he said. " As you all know, this is a Quarter Quell. So I must read from the letter." He opened it. He read aloud:
"As punishment for the uprising in District 13 twenty-five years ago, for the first Quarter Quell the tributes must be picked by the other people in the village. And then I knew I was dead.
