What comes first? Answer this impossible question! Does an egg come first? No one knows coz where did the egg come from and where did the chicken come from? Think about it.

The egg. The basic unit of life is a cell. From this there are two types of cells: gametic and somatic. Gametic cells split off into two further subsections: sperm and egg cells. Although we as humans don't experience blatantly visible egg cells, many animals such as aves and reptiles do hence why taxa (the biological genealogy tree) relate the two as close clades. Sometimes, during the process of well...being an egg, DNA mutates somewhere down the line may that be during replication, See More translation or whenever. A chicken in this case is hatched from a fertilised, by sperm, egg. A regular egg is basically a chicken's period because it is the egg without it being fertilised by a male. When it is, further mutations can "tweak" the already altered genetic material. The mix between the two DNA also helps with these slight "tweaks" slowly between these tweaks and outside forces such as natural selection (say shorter legs are better because they outrun predators more often, the longer leg gene'll start dying out until all chickens have short legs), you end up with an entirely different species which we can recognise as something else.

Egg. The chicken slowly evolved, but for it to be a true chicken it had to hatch from an egg.

I'd say that the egg came first, because they'd laid by some weird prehistoric chicken to evolve into the today's chicken.
