There is some dispute between what a 'ghost' actually is. Some think ghosts are merely energy imprints left from deceased people, but are not actually conscious. Others think ghosts are humans stuck in limbo after they have died, meaning they are not longer alive but haven't passed on to the afterlife. Even in this category, there are still some disagreements. Ghosts can linger in residual hauntings, when something traumatic happens in their life time so they linger on earth (the most common type of haunting), vengeful haunting, when they want to get revenge (usually bad ghosts), a haunting where the ghost feels they need to fulfill something, and/or intelligent hauntings, wherein the ghosts can interact with its senses. It is commonly believed, however, that all ghosts keep their living personality.

Bad ghosts are usually thought of when someone brings up a haunting. They tend to harm people most of the time, the opposite of good ghosts, and are known for playing tricks on people and stuff such as that. Though 'bad' is a relative term, these ghosts do tend to be a bit mean. Bad ghosts are common in all types of hauntings. In residual hauntings, their doings in life are preserved in a form of energy like usual. In vengeful hauntings, bad ghosts usually want revenge on the living, usually because of something that happened while they were alive. In the hauntings where ghosts need to fulfill something, the reason and goal is decided based on the individual ghost. If their goal is fulfilled, the ghost is free to leave earth and pass on to the afterlife. An intelligent haunting can be caused for many reasons, again it is up to the ghost.
