d-ray ruins prom, will probably get arrested
prom week was always a big deal at ballstown high; the girls would buy the prettiest dresses and try and outdo one another. there would be embarrassingly huge promposals, friend groups would rent out limos together, and at the dance itself, there would always be a dj who put on a fantastic light display, as well as fun decorations and a snack table, complete with hors d’oeuvres and a MASSIVE bowl of fruit punch.the night of the dance, the group of boys piled into mitch’s car, dressed in full suits and sunglasses, as boys do. mitch drove, of course, with d-ray riding shotgun and zee and rex in the backseat. loud music boomed from the speakers, a playlist put together by the friend group that was mainly composed of old rock and some alternative indie shit that they liked.
they stepped out one at a time, pulled their tickets from their pockets, and made their way into the building.
“man, i hope you get prom king!” zee chirps and pats d-ray on the back. the brunette grins; now that it’s his senior year, he’s finally eligible. he was running against chase shoemaker and anderson williams; both football players. two football players against… well, d-ray.
“thanks zee dawg!”
see, it wasn’t really the crown or the honor of even the recognition that made d-ray actually want to win, however.
it was a silent tradition at ballstown high that every year, kara mcleary would host a huge afterparty at her house. and whoever won king got to sleep with the prom queen; and this year, the title of queen was likely to go to kara herself— and she was smoking!
d-ray had already prepared himself for the night; he had a tin of breath mints in his pocket and a condom inside of his sock, so he wouldn’t lose it.
d-ray was actually quite sure he’d win. in fact he had a little trick up his sleeve.
or to be exact, stuffed in every pocket of his suit jacket.
rex, mitch, and zee made their way to the front of the room to dance, while d-ray disappeared into a sea of people, probably trying to get people to vote for him.
“you’re looking awful sweaty, rex; you nervous?” mitch smiled.
“ a little.” the blonde cringed slightly.
“it’s really loud in here and there’s a lot of people.” the other two nodded in understanding. they knew rex wasn’t fond of groups or loud noises.
it was also his first prom, as he’d stayed home last year for the reasons above.
in truth he didn’t really want to be there. his friends had convinced him to go as a way to get him to lighten up a little.
moments later, d-ray had found his way back to his friends.
“okay! operation ‘win prom king’ is now underway. he joked. the group laughed and nodded.
they didn’t know what d-ray had told all of those people, but it seemed to convince a lot of people to go drop their ballots into the bucket on the snack table, and quite a few of them decided to get a small cup of fruit punch. nobody questioned it; d-ray was well liked. he wouldn’t need to do anything shady to get people to vote for him.
“hey guys, i think i’m going to go get a drink, i’m really thirsty.” rex announced, but nobody heard him; zee and mitch were too busy dancing and d-ray was off to the side entertaining a couple of girls.
the night went on, and soon enough it was time to announce the prom royalty.
a teacher handed an envelope to the dj, who opened it up and read aloud as students waited suspensefully.
the prom court all stood in the center of the floor, waiting to receive their crowns.
“for prom queen, we have… KARA MCLEARY!” the room erupted into cheers and a metal tiara was placed delicately upon her curly golden locks. she was smiling brightly with those beautiful green eyes that complimented her glittery, cream colored dress so well.
“and your ballstown high school prom king is… DAVID GIBSON”
the students hooted and hollered for d-ray, who immediately made his way over to kara. she was still smiling wide. she placed a gentle hand on d-ray’s shoulder and pulled him in as the slow dance music began.
d-ray didn’t really care about the dance, as long as he got to fuckk her later.
her hair and makeup was so lovely, loosely braided in a crown, with glitter around her pretty eyes. and god that dress! it had to cost a few hundred! he couldn’t wait to take it off he later.
just as they were about to begin the waltz, mitch came up to him and grabbed his arm.
“hey. you need to come here.”
“can it wait man, im trying to dance with kara!” he argued.
“no! we need you to come with us, this is serious!”
“i’ll be back, baby! you stay right there!” d-ray yelled as he was dragged away, crown falling over his head.
mitch brought him to the corner of the room, where zee was crouched next to rex, who sat awkwardly against the wall.
“oh.” the blonde boy said as he glanced up at d-ray.
“heyyy, d. wh’are you up to.”
“i was actually just about to dance with the prettiest girl in the school and i was so rudely interrupted— what do you want?”
“can ya siddown with me?… i missed you…” he reached out his lanky arms, and begrudgingly, d-ray took a seat next to rex, who threw an arm over his shoulder. the brunette scooted away a little, but rex moved closer. rex could smell something… strong on his breath.
“d-ray.” mitch sighed.
“did you do something to the punch?”
“what why would i—“
“did you do something to the punch?”
“why would you assume i’d do that?! i mean yeah. i put a shit ton of vodka in it. but cmon man don’t draw conclusions like that!”
“what the fuckk is wrong with you?!” mitch pinched the bridge of his nose.
“i didn’t think it’d be an issue! can i go dance with the girl now?”
“absolutely not. we’re leaving now and you’re on babysitting duty.”
“what?! but i was gonna get drunk too— and what about the party! i’m supposed to bang kara—“
mitch groaned; d-ray really was a fool. he couldn’t believe he’d spike the punch, get his poor lightweight friend absolutely wasted, and then expect that he wasn’t gonna have to face the consequences.
“you can get as drunk as we want after we’re home.”
“fine.” he groaned.
rex was still dazed on the floor, and his three friends helped him up. the tall boy swayed back and forth, so d-ray held onto his arm.
“d-ray, thanks for holding onto me-“
“yeah, okay, so like. let’s… go home now i guess.
“not yet!” rex cried dramatically, leaning in close, bending over a little so he could rest his head against the brunette’s rigid shoulder.
“bathroom first, d, i’ma ‘bout to pee in my pants”
“okay, man. let’s go.” d-ray sighed.
he was literally just babysitting at this point. he’d been around plenty of drunk people but rex. god. he was the worst one yet.
after taking rex to the bathroom, the four boys went out to the parking lot.
“shotgun!” yelled d-ray after helping rex into the backseat.
mitch just stared at d-ray, refusing to start the car.
“what?”
“we’re not moving until you get in the back with rex. zee can sit up front.”
“cmon! he probably isn’t even allowed, he’s so sort he probably needs a carseat-“
“now.”
huffing, d-ray climbed out of the front seat and reluctantly let zee take his place. he kicked the tire, earning a scolding from mitch, something along the lines of “mess up my car and you’ll be sorry.”
rex was already half asleep with drool dripping from the side of his mouth.
the car started and they began to drive away.
d-ray complained for the first few minutes of the drive, about missing the after prom party and not even getting to dance with kara and how everyone should just lighten the fuckk up about the rex situation, but all his friends just ignored him.
they’d never been…mad at him like this.
they were about fifteen minutes from home when rex began to stir.
“oh, look who’s awake.” d-ray grumbled. the blonde looked around before rubbing his eyes.
“shit… uh.” he sighed, before doing something d-ray really wasn’t expecting.
he laid his head right on his shoulder.
it would’ve been cute if this was kara or any other pretty girl. but rex… he was so tall, and sweaty, and just… god, he was rex. plus he was a man. d-ray wasn’t gay. absolutely not.
“what are you doing, man.”
“just trying to lay my head down. d-ray. i really don’t feel too good. can we please pull over?”
it was only about three seconds later that he threw up all over himself and d-ray.
“rex what the FUCKK!” d-ray cried out in disgust.
the other two had heard the racket and zee started laughing hysterically. mitch sighed, clearly not thrilled about the fact that this was probably going to leave a stain on the seats.
“oh man, are you good back there, rex?” zee asked once he’d finally managed to stop laughing.
“no, i’m not… d-ray yelled at me!” there were tears in his eyes.
the brunette sighed, wrapping his arm around the blonde’s trembling form, cringing silently as he felt the vomit beginning to cool on his pants. thankfully it hadn’t gotten on his white dress shirt.
“uh. sorry i yelled. we’re almost back to mitch’s, we can both get some fresh clothes and you can sleep, drink some water, whatever else. i can get so drunk i forget everything that happened and it’ll all be fine. okay? just don’t cry please. this is awkward enough already.”
“okay…”
mitch finally pulled into the garage and zee and d-ray helped the still very intoxicated rex to his feet. they all went inside except for mitch, who was trying to wash off the seat before it dried too much.
after rex and d-ray had changed, the three boys sat together on the couch. d-ray was downing some of mini bottles of fireball he’d left in the car. rex was still clinging to him.
his plans had been ruined so the best he could do was drink the rest of the night away. and try to pretend that rex was kara. that might help.
zee had at some point changed into some of his clothes that he’d left here last time they’d come over, and fallen asleep on the couch like he usually did.
d-ray eventually must’ve fallen asleep, too because the next thing he knew he was lying in bed.
one by one his mind began to register things.
everything was blurry and his body felt fatigued, and there was this nasty taste in his mouth.
hey—where were his clothes?
he couldn’t remember much. prom king… kara mcleary. he smiled, his mind vaguely remembering some of the fine details. the creaking of the bed and the sweat running down his face. the way his nails had dug into her tender skin and how he’d tugged her hair and how good it felt and the way she’d silently screamed his name as her pretty blue eyes rolled back. even afterwards, she’d laid her head against his shoulder and told him she loved him. it had been fantastic; everyone who’d told him that kara was an exceptional lay had been right. he’d never felt anything like it before. out of all of the women he’d banged, she definitely cracked his top five.
he laid there for a moment, just remembering what he could of last night’s adventure… and then the fact that he hadn’t even gotten a chance to go to the party, and that kara’s eyes weren’t blue and oh my god. this wasn’t kara mcleary.
who had he…
hesitantly he pulled back the sheets to reveal the naked body next to him, and felt his heart drop to his stomach. then, he glanced up to see mitch standing in the doorway with his mouth wide open and he thought he died that very moment.
“d-ray and REX?! seriously?! oh my god—“
d-ray couldn’t even think of a good response. he couldn’t just say “this isn’t what it looks like” because this was exactly what it looked like and he knew he couldn’t cover it up. he just sat there for a second with his mouth hanging open before finally deciding he had to say something.
“hey, sometimes ya just gotta kiss the homies goodnight!”
