Some...Difficult Memories (Chapter 11)
Cinderpaw sat in her den, twirling a dandelion stem in her claw. She was reciting each herb. What they look like, what they do, where to find them. Longpelt was giving her a quiz tomorrow, and she didn't want to fail. Correction; she didn't want to let her clan down.
She stopped at 'chervil'. She always forgot that one.
She forced herself to her paws and began to think of something else besides herbs... Namely Hawkpaw.
She sighed and picked up the dandelion. With out thinking, she put it just next to her ear.
She began to hum a strange little melody. It was simple, yet beautiful.
She started to twirl around her den.
She stopped mid twirl. What the StarClan am I doing?! She thought. There's no time for... Whatever this is! I need to study. She sat back down and continued to recall the different herbs.
While having a mental argument on whether chervil or cobwebs were used to stop bleeding, her mother, Bluefang, padded in. She sat down next to her daughter. "How's medicine cat life treating ya?" She asked, wrapping her tail around Cinderpaw's back. "Pretty frustrating. I keep mixing up chervil and cobweb!" "One's for bleeding, right?" Bluefang asked. She sighed. "I don't know..."
Her mom smiled and purred.
"How's Brightpaw and Blackpaw? Are they having fun as warriors?" Her mom smiled again. "Oh, absolutely. They love it." She chuckled lightly. "So they... Don't... Love it?" Cinderpaw asked, confused.
"You know everyday they wish they were medicine cats." "Really?" She nodded. "Mhm. They're always complaining on how strict their mentors are, and how they wish they had an easy job like yo-" "I GET THE EASY JOB?!" She screeched.
"AM I NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE 'HARD JOBS' OR SOMETHING? LET ME TELL YOU, THIS IS NOT EASY! I HAVE TO REMEMBER EVERY. SINGLE. STINKIN'. HERB, OR THE WHOLE CLAN DIES!"
"Now that's a bit of an over exaggeration-"
"IF THEY THINK THEIR JOB IS SO HARD, THEY CAN-"
"What's going on?" Brightpaw asked, slowly entering the den with Blackpaw trailing behind.
"Yeah, it sounds like someone stepped on a spoiled kittypet!" Blackpaw giggled.
Bluefang tried to conceal a small chuckle, while Cinderpaw muttered something under her breath.
"What's it like being a medicine cat?" Brightpaw asked.
"It's soooo easy." She said sarcastically.
"You're so lucky!" Blackpaw gushed. "I've always wanted to be a medicine cat. I want to help cats, not hurt them, the way-" She stopped, in a trance. Brightpaw put a comforting paw on her shoulder.
"She's gone, Black, she's really gone."
A single tear slid down her black fur.
"Sometimes I hear her... Calling to me... Telling me to come back... come back..."
"It's ok, calm down, sshhh shhh sshhhhh..."
Blackpaw stared into space, her eyes slowly widening until they were the size of the moon pool.
"No. No! NO! IT WAS JUST A NIGHTMARE, IT WAS JUST A NIGHTMARE, it was just a nightmare, it was just a nightmare, it was just a nightmare..." She said over and over, slowly rocking back and forth.
"Oh my... I better take her to her den..." Bluefang said, rising to her paws. She picked up Blackpaw and carried her away.
"Great job, Cinders." Brightpaw scolded. "Look what you've done!" She followed Bluefang out of the den, tail held high in the air.
Cinderpaw collapsed to the floor.
Even my own sisters hate me...
Great.
