Darcy's call
It was Darcy. Why couldn’t he have called a few moments earlier? I thought to myself. Mind you there was nothing he could have done.“Samantha? Are you there?” he asked.
“Yep” I said breathlessly.
“Are you alright? You don’t sound too good” Darcy stated.
“I’m fine” I said but you could tell he knew I wasn’t.
“I was just wondering if you’d want to catch up this weekend. I mean Rage is still undergoing maintenance repairs but we could hang out at the mall or something. Ryan wants to see Laura so I was thinking we could go on a double date or something” he said.
“I don’t know” I said. I really wanted to go but the truth was I didn’t want to hurt him. I had just had a glimpse of the monster I could become if I was angry enough. I felt like bringing Darcy into the whole thing would be too much. I walked into the toilets. I had scratch marks around my neck from where Jarrod had been strangling me. If I went out with Darcy he’d eventually find out who gave me them.
“What’s up?” Darcy asked.
“Why do you sound so upset?”
“It’s a long story and it doesn’t matter.”
“Yes it does I want to know” said Darcy.
“Well I don’t want to tell you” I said loudly and then quickly regretted it. Darcy hadn’t been anything but nice to me and all I gave him back in return were snappy comments. I just didn’t want him in this mess too. Jarrod would have killed me. What if he killed Darcy too? What if Darcy got so involved he talked to Jarrod and they got into a fight? What if Jarrod used Darcy as bait to get me to give in? There were too many what ifs. I was overthinking this. Meanwhile Darcy had gone silent on the phone.
“Darcy I didn’t mean to” I said.
“It’s ok. I understand. Privacy and all. Stranger danger” he said but he sounded hurt. I started crying. I couldn’t take this. I stuffed everything up. I was a monster. I was ruining people’s lives. I had to stop talking. Shut my big mouth. The phone went dead. Darcy had hung up.
