History: Evelyn
EVELYN'S POVWe were all at Leo’s house, and I was recounting the incident at the waterfall.
“Well, the other day, when Ryia rescued that cat, it was really strange. She threw it down to someone watching-“
“That would be me,” Margaret butts in. I try not to roll my eyes.
“OK, I couldn’t see you. Anyways, you passed it off to someone else, and that person walked over to the creek and dumped the poor kitten in…”
An old man walks in as I’m talking. Had I said something wrong? Had something happened? His eyes are as round as the saucers in my mother’s French style china tea set.
“Did you say that a man dumped a cat in the river? By the waterfall, perhaps?”
I nod slowly, confused. “It was really cruel. The poor cat-“
“Leo, can I talk to you? Alone?”
Now I’m really confused. What did Leo know about the cat? He wasn’t even there.
Leo stands, looking just as dumbfounded as I was, and follows Hadrian into what I assume is his workroom, shutting the door behind him.
I blink, confused. Why was Leo talking to the strange old man? How did he know him? I’d never met him.
“Who was that?” Fred asks as I finally blurt, “What was that all about?”
Peter shrugs. "That man was as much of a stranger to me as he was to you," he states matter-of-factly. "We should probably leave him alone to talk with Leo. It looks like it might be important."
Margaret nods and leans back against her chair. "When are they going to finish talking?" she asks. Fred shrugs and picks at the table. Peter sighs and rubs his forehead.
I drift off into space, thinking about the trap-door and-
I snap my fingers. “I just remembered something! There's something else I needed to tell you! Before I saw the man put the cat into the river, I- I found something... It was a trap door, under the water. It- it was locked, and from the look of it, it hasn't been opened in quite a while..."
In a moment or two, the door opens, and Leo steps out, a strange look on his face.
“I like your necklace,” snorts Margaret.
I roll my eyes at her, but Leo yanks off the beautiful charm and stuffs it in his backpack. If he didn’t want it, maybe I’d ask for it later.
Peter stands, brushing himself off. “It’s getting late. We all need to get home. Especially me, I have strict curfew- I can’t wait until I’m not just a squire anymore.”
I nod and sigh, heading home.
