Fight for our lives
The wolf finds them again, and Sapphire tells Surge one firm"No” when he turns to them to silently plead for permission. She didn’t even need eyes to see what he was trying to say. So he and the girls dodge. One spear hits Sapphire and takes her out. A second later, she blacks out. Another minute and they’re back at the corridor with one after the wooden bridge standing there.
“Surge?” Sapphire asks, one hand raised one hand to try and find where they are. Surge cautiously takes it and places it on his cheek.
“Yeah, I’m right here, darlin'"
“Good,” she breathes, “Good.” He looks down at her right wrist and finds a new flower right next to the other one.
The group goes back and forth between the rooms until Sapphirss right hand is covered, and then the flowers crawl up to their arm until finally, finally, Jackie manages to deflect one attack and the wolf looks tired out. Surge uses their momentary reprieve to grab Sapphire and run. Once they’re a good few feet away from the wolf, who’s yelling threats behind them, he teleports a short distance, and then another, and then another – short bursts enough to get them away but not to exhaust him. The girls soon join him. Once their feet touch solid hot ground, he stops. Sapphire pushes away from him and he staggers a little, shocked, before the hedgehog turns away and then retches. He winces. He forgets how teleportation can be disorienting to those not used to it.
“Don’t,” Sapphire shudders and draws in a shaky breath. “Don’t do that again.”
“Can’t promise that, darlin',” he says, “Come on, let’s get you cleaned up.”
Sapphire can’t feel both their hands anymore. It’s Surge who cleans and patches them up, and then takes care of the others too who thank him greatly. Sapphire is glad that Surge and her friends are getting along. Well, not exactly getting along, but they are learning to work together. The group doesn’t know that Sapphire can barely feel their legs too. The flowers have taken over both her arms and her torso is probably going next, but her legs are starting to get numb. Surge tells them that they’re making their way down. Sapphire can’t feel their feet as they walk anymore even though they know that the forget me not sketches haven’t gotten to them yet them yet.
The next Slarian is a grey echidna. But Surge isn’t letting him lay a hand on Sapphire. Sapphire wants to say thank you but their throat is getting numb now too. The echidna strangly lands couple of punches on the group before running off leaving them all alone. Sapphire drags her feet as they walk, too tired to muster the strength to actually lift them.
“Hey, darlin'?” Surge speaks. She lifts her head as best as she could. “We kind of need to hurry. No pressure, but things are going to get a little bitter if we lag.” Sapphire touches Surges face and what she can tell he is smiling. She hears her friends coo and groans. She can't tell who is who though. So they try best to walk. There is no doubt that Negro and the wolf are still chasing them, that’s why they’ve been walking and walking for as much as they can now. No more stopping. Because they all know Surge is a traitor now. And Surge will die if they get caught and it will be Sapphire's fault. So they walk. And they stumble upon more Slarians. Sapphire dies again, twice, because she's too tired and slow to dodge and she thinks that she's losing one of her feet for real now. Surge is starting to get tired, she can tell, and she apologises, but Surge just sounds sad when he brushes her hair aside and says,
"It’s okay, darlin', it’s okay.” The echidna fights them several times more leading to more deaths.
They manage to rest at a hotel. Surge keeps Sapphire close to him at all times since the Slarians don’t appear to be very friendly around here. And Sapphire thinks about just staying asleep here, but Surge is right. They will be found out, and Surge will die if they are caught. So they walk. And a lizard Slarian makes them die and die and die until Sapphire's right leg is out of commission and she walks with a limp. Surge gets frustrated and ends up killing the lizard. Sapphire cries. No ones speaks to Surge for a little while. Theycontinue walking, Surge supporting Sapphire's weight, while the girls remains on gaurd to scan for danger. This time, they’re so close. They fight the echidna once more and they die again and they all wake up at the hotel. And the Sapphire knows that it’s her other leg that’s going to pay this time. This time the lizard doesn’t die. Neither does the echidna although Surge keeps on growling as he dodges like he’d rather rip the lizard apart. Sapphire is thankful that he doesn’t.
By the time that they’re at new ground, Sapphire stumbles and falls to the ground with a yelp. She scrapes her good knee and one of her cheeks. Her arms are useless.
“Shit,” Surge curses as he moves beside her and then pauses before slipping one arm under her back and the other under her knees. Sapphire signs,
"I’m fine."
“No you’re not,” Surge says.
"Not your fault." Surge is silent for a while. Then he just continues walking.
“I’ll get you to the Surface,” he says, “Don’t worry. No matter what it takes, darlin', I’m getting you to the Surface. All of you” he pauses to glance at the girls who smile at him. Sapphire wants to tell him that he shouldn't have promised that but her throat was too numb.
