Life matters
Sapphire doesn’t explain to Surge why they don’t want the wolf to be hurt. Surge doesn’t ask anymore. The girls are almost asleep, Sapphire's head is lolling a little and even Surge is a little drowsy. So they sit by the patch of land just near the wooden bridge. The wolf hasn’t followed. Surge probably threw her harder than he thought and she was dead. Or was biding her time. Or was looking for them in all the wrong places. But they need to rest now, because if she was alive, then she will find them later. Sapphire sits beside him and puts her head on his shoulder and this time he doesn’t flinch. He closes his eyes, just resting but not sleeping.“We shouldn’t hurt people,” Sapphire mumbles. He cracks an eye open to look down at them. “Always be kind.” A pause, “Sometimes kindness is all we can give. Sometimes kindness is enough.” Surge falls asleep with those words repeating in his head.
The wolf does find them later, and Surge hauls Sapphire on to his back, the girls stay together and fight off anything coming their way. Surge could fight, he should fight. Always be kind. Sometimes kindness is all we can give. Sometimes kindness is enough. Always be kind.
“Don’t hurt her,” Sapphire mumbles into his fur.
“I know.”
He and the girls dodge, weave and run from the wolf. They reach a dead end and Surge digs his heels into the wood, skidding to a stop just before they’re a push over the edge. The wolf sends her spear into the wood grinning smugly. Their part of the bridge falls away. Theres darkness and a splash of water.
“Surge? Surge! Surge, wake up, please!" He wakes up to someone screaming his name above him. There’s a light that’s being obscured by something, and when his vision clears, Sapphires face is above him. Obscured by forget me not sketches and all, but it’s still Sapphire, light above them acting like a halo behind their head, and they’re soaking wet and maybe crying but he can’t tell. Maria is sat with them and she sighs in relief too when Surge wakes up.
“He’s awake,” she declares. Sapphire exhales and then leans back. Sobs and then lets out a laugh.
“Thank God.” Surge tries to sit up, ends up wincing and then lies back down again.
“Mind if we stay here for a while, darlin'?” Surge coughs weakly, “I’m a little tired right now.”
“Yeah. We’re not going anywhere,” Sapphire says, “I can’t see without you anyway.” He falls silent at that. Half of the sketches that have taken over everyone are his fault. From his own act of killing them, to betraying them by ratting them out to his partner, and now to neglecting their health. They haven’t taken off that jacket since he gave it to them though.
“You’re not sick from the water, darlin'?” Sapphire shakes her head. He hums and closes his eyes, exhaling.
“Thank you,” Sapphire says. He opens his eyes again to look at her smiling.
“For what?”
“For sparing her,” she says. Surge only curls his face in that curiosity-confusion frown again. Sapphire then reaches out and pokes his face.
"Your doing it again aren't you?" Surge grunts raising an eyebrow he soon realises she can't see. "That look you always give me!" Sapphire smiles.
"But you can't see me, how do you know?"
"I just do" A pause
"Did you know the Surge from Mobius" Sapphire stays silent and still.
"Yeah" she sighs. "I wish I could see you, Surge" She's muttering to herself, or the Mobius Surge but Slarius Surge overhead her. Surge chuckles.
"I was an eyesore anyway, sweetheart,” he says. The blue hedgehog appears to disagree as they shake their head.
