Heathens
Tyler's P.O.V:What was Josh thinking? He knew I hated meeting new people. I pushed the thought of this Nathan guy out of my head and started to get ready for the gig. I'd never heard of the guys we were going to see but Josh seemed to think they were good, The Dying Bandits, a techno/metal/rap group from Adelaide, Australia, it was the band's first time coming overseas.
Nathan didn't have a car yet, Josh told me, which meant we'd have to pick him up. Josh put a Dying Bandits cd in so I could begin familiarizing myself with the band. They weren't bad, the mix of genres went quite well together, the album Josh had shows some bmth tones but they were touring for apparently showed their techno/rap side more. "What do you think of them?" Josh piped up. "They're not bad." I forced a smile on my face and Josh frowned. "It alright, I know you're a bit uncomfortable with this sort of stuff but Nathan is a really nice guy. The only thing I need to warn you about is that he's a recovering alcoholic so try and stick to the other stuff." Well, at least he had his own flaws.
Nathan's P.O.V:
Even though I'd insisted on walking Josh wanted to pick me up, he was a nice guy. I hoped his friend would be the same. As I slipped on my hoodie a car pulled up in the drive, peeking out of the window I confirmed my suspicions that it was Josh and Tyler. I made my way out to the car, Tyler shyly waved at me and Josh greeted me with a confident fist bump.
The car ride was a bit awkward between me and Tyler but our mutual friend acted as a bridge over the gap between us. I would never guess how quickly that chasm would fill.
Wanting to avoid parking trouble, Josh parked a few blocks away. "It's really cold out." Tyler muttered, wrapping his arms around himself as we walked down the street. I looked at him, then myself, then Josh and finally myself again. I was the only one in a jumper. I took it off and awkwardly pushed it into his arms, he gave me look as if to say 'are you sure?' I nodded in response.
The music pounded in our ears, the Dying Bandits weren't on yet but they were coming up soon. "Anybody want a drink?" I offered, Josh shook his head but Tyler piped up "Uh, I might get a Pepsi or something." It seemed that he was getting a bit more relaxed with me, I smiled and gestured for him to follow me to the bar. "We'll have a beer and a Pepsi thanks" Tyler looked at me with a worried expression "Uh...are you su-" I smiled at him, valuing his concern for me, "Don't worry, it's only when I'm alone."
"Oh...sorry about that."
"Nah, it's fine, it shows you care, that's good" Tyler smiled and let out a small laugh in return. "So, you're friends with Josh?" I nodded "Yea, I guess I am, never thought that would happen." Tyler cocks his head in confusion and I chuckled "friends aren't my speciality" and it's true. They aren't. Sure, I've always had Joel and Benji but other than that...I was a lone wolf. My companion awkwardly swirled his drink around frowning "same here." I looked over to Josh who was starting to mingle with the rest of the crowd "well it seems our friend doesn't have as much trouble as us" I managed to crack a smile out of Tyler with this comment, "Yea, Josh is a lot more of a people person than me."
"So uh, you met Josh through Brendon yea?" Tyler queried, I nodded in response "Yea, Sarah sent me there" Tyler became a bit more interested when he heard that name "you know Sarah?"
"Yeah, she was my nurse"
"Oh, do you mind me asking...why you went to the hospital?"
"Being extremely drunk and having no self-esteem."
"Oh."
"Yea."
"So, where are you from?"
"Australia."
"Oh that's cool! is it true that there are kangaroos that just wander the streets?"
"Nope, that's a common American misconception of Australia." I laughed. Tyler blushed in embarrassment.
"Well, I feel stupid now." I gave Tyler a friendly punch in the shoulder, "Don't worry, people ask me shit like that al the time."
Josh's P.O.V:
My two friends still sat at the bar together. They seemed to be getting along quite well. I knew they'd like each other! Hopefully, the night would keep going this way. "Thanks for having us guys, now, the main show! THE DYING BANDITS!" The previous band walked off stage and the boys walked out, Jamie, Ralph, Sid, Jaxon and Derek. A few screams of encouragement erupted from the crowd, including mine.
Nathan's P.O.V:
The other band, Moon Razors I think their name was, had only just started when we arrived so The Dying Bandits had only just come on. By now we both had a few beers running through our system. "So, how'd you meet Josh?" I queried Tyler as we downed the last of our drinks and headed back towards the action. "A mutual friend introduced us...through music." He smiled at me. "Sounds familiar!" I chuckled. I could see Tyler getting a bit bothered by all the people, so was I, without thinking I protectively wrapped an arm around his shoulders. I was a fairly tall guy and I figured I could, well, shield him from all these strangers. At first, he tensed up and I regretted my choice but my friend soon relaxed and let me guide him towards Josh.
Before we could get to Josh, Tyler stopped and looked me in the eyes, blushing lightly. "Are you gay?" Now we were both blushing. "H-how...?" I let my arm drop back to my side. "Well, I'm about as straight as a bendy ruler." He moved my arm to where it had been hooked around him then gestured towards Josh "Come on."
The band was pretty good, they knew how to get a crowd going. Even though I was really enjoying myself I couldn't get past what had happened with Tyler. Did he like me? Did I like him?
No! That wasn't right! Hell, I'd only known him for one night! Anyway, mum wouldn't have a piece of it, I'd have to hide him from the world. "COME HERE YOU LITTLE FAG!" A plate flies towards me. NO!I shake myself out of the flashback and Tyler looks at me, slightly worried, "you alright?". I nod and run my hands through my hair.
Despite me being an anxious piece of shit the night was good. We stayed well after the band left. I got a bit drunk but Tyler was closely monitoring me making sure I'd be alright. Josh was also very protective of me but a bit more casual about it. Josh offered for me to crash at his with Tyler and I accepted.
"Are you guys alright sleeping in the same bed? I'll take the couch, unless you'd prefer to take the couch, Nathe?" Josh asked the two of us as he opened the door, I turned to Tyler and shrugged "I'm fine with sharing if you are." Tyler pursed his lips in thought, "sure."
"Who wants scrambled eggs?" I awoke to Josh's voice calling out from the kitchen. Forgetting that I was already at the edge of the bed (because I'd shared it with Tyler), I went to roll towards that very edge. Of course, this resulted in me landing on the floor with a loud thud. Tyler bolted upright and glared in my direction, "Are you alright?" I rolled onto my back and sighed in frustration. "I'm fine."
We made our way to the kitchen, where Josh already had breakfast waiting for us. "Looks nice, thanks Josh!" I smiled at him. The three of us sat down and began eating our food. "So, what are you guys doing today?" Josh shrugged, "not sure." "Wanna come over to mine and...play games or some shit?" Tyler smiled and Josh nodded. "Sounds good!"Josh remarked.
I was a bit ashamed of the fact that I didn't have a licence and felt rude for having to get him to drive us all to my place but he didn't seem to give a f*ck. Once again, I forgot my house key and had to use the spare from under the rock.
"So uh, these are my games, I've got more ps3 games than anything else." Tyler reached out for Black Ops 2 as Josh nodded in agreement. I set up the ps3 and got a good old game of free-for-all started.
"F*CK!" Josh screamed as I shot him in the head for the 10th time. "You two are ganging up on me! You bitches!" The three of us laughed "Well, you're too hard to beat by ourselves so we had to team up!" Tyler remarked. "TEAMWORK!" I barked, high fiving my friend at the same time.
Suddenly Josh's phone rang, he glanced down at it and his face dropped "Sorry guy, I have to take this." I gave him an understanding nod and he walked into the other room. A few minutes later he came back out "Sorry, I've gotta head out, I can pick you up after if you want, Tyler?" Josh glanced at our friend. "No, you don't have to go driving around after me, I'll come with you now" Tyler sighed in response.
With my friends now gone I found myself very lonely and VERY bored. I wandered around my house aimlessly when my phone rang. Benji! "NATHAN! I'm so sorry I haven't been in touch, how are you?" HIs voice ran down the line and spilt out of the speaker in urgency. "Don't worry about it, I've been fine, How've you been?"
"Alright, stressing, Joel and I have been up in the bush, just after your accident we got a call telling us our gran has been sick. We've only just had a chance to head into the town and-"
"Is she okay?"
"Well....not really but she's still breathing, enough about my problems. Oh yeah, she said you could come up if you want, you're basically family!"
