Can You Say Awkward?
Avery's POVWe tried to comfort Emma, but even she realized Ian like Libby and that was final. So Lexi and Emma decided to play some matchmaker with Lexi's friend Amethyst. I, however was not in the mood. With Emma's boy-problems finished, I was back to worrying about Aaron. Did I say worrying? Understatement of the century, my friends...
The school day dragged on and on. I couldn't focus in Math (yes have a test today, of ALL DAYS) because it was right before Biology. As I walked down the hall, panic clouded my thoughts like an angry swarm of wasps. What would Aaron think? What about Mr. Steinman? And the rest of the class?
As I walked in, Aaron gave me a week "Hello" as I sat down. Could I get any worse. Oh yes it could. As Eva and her passé walked in, Dawn in tow, she sneered, "Oooh, look, frog gut girl!"
The rest of her minions laughed meanly, while Dawn feebly muttered, "Don't call her that."
I was usually unfazed by her (and frog gut girl? That wasn't even clever.), but what hurt the most was Aaron, who sat there saying nothing.
Aaron's POV
As Eva's little minions laughed mindlessly, I just sat there, like a useless brick. What was I supposed to say...?
Avery's POV
Thankfully, Mr. Steinman chose to forget about yesterday's "incident". We learned about amphibian autonomy. From textbooks though, NOT dead frogs. Thank the heavens.
Aaron was still not really talking to me, and we wrote down notes in silence. Talk about torture! But, I managed to get through it, and soon we were headed for Dance Committee. Not wanting to face the silence, I choose to walk with Sarah instead.
Avery's POV
At the Dance Committee, I busied myself with preparations, but never less, Aaron stayed in my mind like a shadow. It was like a hole in my heart and my head.
On the bright side, we all heard Libby sing. Her voice was clear and perfect...mesmerizing. We all clapped and clapped for her (especially Ian...Ryan had to yell at him to stop...), and she seemed to be happier than she'd been in ages. I think the positive reinforcement helped. Watch out Eva, 'cause Libby's coming to DESTROY you!
Aaron's POV
I'd been horrible today, and I needed to fix that. I also needed to somehow ask Avery to the dance...What if she asked me? That would be soo much easier. But I doubted she'd do that.
Taking a deep breath, I walked up to Avery and asked...
Avery's POV
Aaron walked up to me, looking nervous. He was going to ask me to the dance! Finally!
"Will you go to..." he stopped.
WHAT, WHAT, WHAT?
"Will you go to my house today so we can play some video games?"
Finally!...WAIT WHAT?! I thought. WHAT?
"Sure!" I said, trying to plaster a smile on my face as I walked away, tears threatening to spill out. How stupid could I get? Of course he wasn't going to ask me. What was I thinking?
And Aaron just stood there, watching my run away.
Aaron's POV
WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?! I. WASN'T. SUPPOSED. TO. DO. THAT.
Avery's POV
Aaron and I walked to his house like we'd done so many times before, but this time in complete silence. It felt like reaping day in District 12-maybe even worse.
When we reached his house, we both sprawled onto his living room couch, still in silence. Awkwardness. Horrible, HORRIBLE awkwardness.
"Do you want to..."
Go to the dance with me? I thought. YES!
"Play Band Hero?"
Why did I fall for it? Again?
"Sure..."
Awkward
We played in complete silence, something that had never happened before, and it shattered my heart.
Aaron's POV
I'd already failed twice. This time I HAD to get it right.
"Hey I was wondering, I you aren't..."
"...thirsty if you wanted me to get some water for you?"
Wait what did I say? Darn it. Darn it. DARN IT.
Avery raised her eyebrow at me like I was a fool, so not being to bear it, I walked to the kitchen, to "get water".
Avery's POV
As Aaron left, I couldn't hold it any longer. I buried my face in the pillow. I'd been to Aaron's house more times than I could count, but now I felt like a stranger.
Aaron walked back in with a bottle of water, and for a second, saw me crying. I hastily threw it on the ground. He sat down without comment, making me feel terribly exposed. Awkward.
Aaron's POV
Avery looked like she'd been crying. I bet it was because I'd been a horrible friend.
Aaron's POV
I tried (and failed) to ask Avery to the dance five more times before I completely gave up, so I just sat (and lost horribly to Avery in Band Hero) in silence.
Avery and Aaron's POV
Can you say awkward?
