Mean Girl(s)
(This is Miku)*BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP!*
The alarm clock buzzed angrily at me as i fumbled for the snooze button. As the noise subsided, i collapsed onto my pillow face-first. How long has it been since it went off? The clock was flashing in a bright neon pink: 7:13 AM.
"Shit."
"I DONT HAVE TIME FOR BREAKFAST MOM! BYE!" I was was still struggling to zip up my jacket as I rushed through the door. The heavy autumn air promised rain later today. I bolted across the cracked pavement, leaves crunching against the soles of my sneakers. I shivered and prayed the bus was still there. The last students were getting on just as I rounded the corner. I put on a burst of speed and caught up to the bus just in time to slip in through the closing doors. I plopped myself in the second row and bent over to tie my shoelaces. Now that I think about it, it was a miracle I didn't trip over them during my maniac dash to catch the bus.
"You should really join the school cross-country team!" a high-pitched voice made me jump. "They have absolutely NO style with their ugly uniforms, and neither do you! See? Perfect match!" A blond girl with a high ponytail and ice-blue eyes reached down to brush a leaf off of my shoulder. In other words, Libby. Crazed laughter followed her "witty" insult, and a girl with hair even longer then Libby's collapsed onto the dark green leather seat of the bus. Libby shot her a dirty look and jabbed her in the ribs, not in a friendly way, and the girl's laughter trailed off as she grasped her side. I had learned to ignore bullies through all these years, but there was something about this pair that thoroughly disgusted me.
"Is that all?" I asked, trying to sound not very interested. I wanted to look down at my nails too, but then I thought I would be overdoing it.
Libby stared at me, and the girl with the long brown hair raised an eyebrow. Libby got into my face. The girl tried to follow, but there wasn't enough room, so she settled on leaning back with her arms crossed. This painted a pretty intimidating picture, and I was having trouble keeping my cool.
"Look you... thing..." Libby said in a voice hardly above a whisper. Her breath smelled like vanilla and for some reason tuna, which, trust me, is a quite sickening combination.
"Heather," I cut her off. She looked confused.
"What?"
"Heather. I'm not a thing, i'm Heather." She rolled her eyes.
"Whatever. Same THING. No pun intended," she glanced over at the girl expectedly, who after a moment of hesitation giggled. Libby's frown deepened.
"Honestly Miku, work on your laugh." The girl, who was apparently named Miku, did a sort of half-nod half-bow thing. Libby turned back to me.
"Remember these names: Libby and Miku. You'll need it." As if on cue (and it probably was) Miku did that hysterical laugh again, so loud and disturbing that the bus driver looked back at us through his mirror. Apparently deciding two girls cackling over another who was shrinking back into a corner was nothing important, he went back to waiting for the light to turn green. Libby backed out of my face, her gum snapping as she chewed, and they retreated to seats further back in the bus. I shivered and gagged at the remaining stench of vanilla tuna, and hardly even noticed as Candy got onto the bus and sat beside me.
