The First Regret
The full moon disappeared under a grey cloud, the cheery breeze had stopped. The late night birds had stopped their mellow and soft song, sensing something was wrong. The prey paused their scuffling as dogs treaded through the dreadfully silent forest, something just wasn't there."What a quiet journey we had coming back" Alpha observed as the dog gathered around the High Rock, "now as you know, our deputy has passed away. He died of honor of being a faithful deputy, he died peacefully in is sleep". Sorrowful whispers swept through the uneasy dogs, for they sensed the quietness was dread. "So I must pick a new one" Alpha went on, "and I pick, WATERFALL!". Silence. No dog came up, no cheers came up, nothing. "Ahem, Waterfall?" Alpha felt a shock of concern jolt through him, "WATERFALL?!". And there was it, the one thing missing. There was no sandy shiba inu playing and smiling, there was no floppy eared dog laughing and giving hope. "DO ANY OF YOU KNOW WHERE SHE IS?" Alpha roared. The pack shook their heads, except for Coyote who hung her head in shame. Alpha found the odd one, "COYOTE! HOW ABOUT YOU? YOU WERE HER BEST FRIEND". Coyote winced at the sadness coming from her leader, "I saw her um at the Truce meeting". "Anything else?" Alpha's bark was low. "I saw her um speed off into the trees, that's, that's all" Coyote stared truthfully at her Alpha. Alpha looked sad, his eyes clouded with misery. "Meeting dismissed, I need time to think" Alpha jumped off the rock halfheartedly, not even looking his pack.
The very first regret started in the morning's weak sunlight, the morning doves were singing a quiet and sorrowful song. Coyote had rushed out her den, to get somewhere before the pack woke up. She swerved to avoid the trees, stopping at a unnaturally big bush. A red snout peeked out of it, the dog slithered out the bush. There standing in front of her was Fire, but bigger and now a Fighter.
"Fire" Coyote touched noses with the handsome dog. "Ah, Coyote" Fire licked her ears, "how is your pack? How's Waterfall?". "Pack is fine other then losing our deputy" Coyote told him, "and um-". "Really? That's sad, who's your new deputy?" Fire interrupted. "That's just it! Waterfall was going to be, but she vanished!" Coyote sped through it, "AND IT'S ALL MY FAULT!". Coyote sobbed into Fire's fur, Fire licked her head. "How is it your fault?" Fire asked. "I made her mad" Coyote sputtered, "and jealous!". "Oh" Fire shook is head, "it's not your fault". "It is so" Coyote pulled away from Fire, "I'm coward Fire, a bloody coward". "Don't call yourself that!" Fire woofed, "you're no coward". "I am, and I'm a liar" Coyote looked regretfully at Fire, "I never fought a Doberman or saved my pack! Midnight saved me from one, and I ran and hid". Fire's gaze softened, "Now we all make horrible mistakes". "BUT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! I CAN'T FIX THIS ONE!" Coyote yowled. "Yes you ca-" Fire was cut off. "NO I CAN'T" Coyote sobbed.
Fire sighed, "why is she jealous?". "Cause I love you" Coyote didn't look at him, "cause I told you for myself". "But that's not true, I chose you!" Fire insisted, "true used to like her, but I moved on! Your the true one for me!". Coyote looked sadly at him, "Maybe so...". And ran off.
