New Moons -Epilogue-
-2 years later-Hunter passed me a glass of lemonade he got from the pavilion. It was early in the afternoon.
"Happy 16 birthday Mia," he said.
"Well, technically my 170, but who's counting?" I giggled.
"Yeah, but if we put 170 candles on a cake the place would burn down," Hunter joked.
It's been about two years since I left the Hunt. I got taller and my hair got lighter and darker throughout the seasons. The effect of the oath had worn off completely.
The Hunters still rarely came, except Evie, who came about four times last year. I loved it when she came, but then I heard the news. She had lost a battle with a Manticore, and she died about six months ago. I still couldn't get over it, but I knew she would get her Elysium, which would be the perfect place for her. I heard from the others that Evie had silently terrorized Adele, just by the thought of her, which might have ultimately led to her untimely end in a battle with Empousi. Another thing I heard, was that she was secretly helping monsters in other battles, which meant that backstabbing and cheating obviously ran through her veins.
I had liked being a Hephaestus kid. I made a few friends, some of them Hermes kids (which helped when their half-siblings made their rounds) but most either Athena or Hephaestus. A few of the Aphrodite kids admired me for choosing love over being a Huntress, which felt good because it meant others thought I made the right choice.
"Mia?" Hunter asked.
I swallowed my sip of lemonade. "Yes?"
"Do you think you could help me practice my archery?"
I looked at him and smiled. "Sure, let me get my bow."
"I'll come with you," he suggested.
We walked to the Hephaestus cabin. When He opened the door the lights were off. I clapped my hands for them to turn on.
"SURPRISE!!" a crowd of people yelled. It was my cabin, a few Hermes and Athena kids, and almost the whole Aphrodite cabin.
I was speechless.
"Happy birthday Mia," Hunter said.
Ingrid, one of my cabin-mates, spoke up, "We knew if we put 170 candles on the cake the place would burn down, but 16 just didn't seem fair, so we put 170 electric candles that darken when blew on!
Nothing could hide the big grin on my face. This was where I was meant to be. Not in the 1800's with James. Not in the Hunt for eternity, but here. In the Hephaestus cabin, with my friends, half-siblings, and Hunter. I thought being with James was my path, but no, it wasn't. Was it my destiny to be a Huntress? Nope. So what was my fate? Being with Hunter. Here. Unlikely? Yes. But sometimes the most unlikely destiny, is yours, and, while you don't realize it, the universe is trying to get you to look at a new moon, to finally see your fate.
