Chapter One
It was midnight on Sunday, I was standing on the balcony looking up at the stars, they always looked so pretty to me. The way that they twinkled and glowed in the night sky was so beautiful. You may be wondering; “It’s midnight, why are you not asleep?” Well, I have been finding it hard to sleep lately, my best friend, Sapphire was getting increasingly worried about me, since I used to sleep like a log.Sapphire and I have known each other since birth, our parents were next to each other in the labour ward and had become really good friends. Sapphire was born before me; about half an hour I would say before I was born. Ever since that day, our parents have kept in touch and Sapphire and I grew up together. We went to the same school, same after school clubs. We basically did everything together, there was nothing that could separate us.
I heard Sapph mumble in the background and I knew straight away that she was waking up, so I went back inside from the balcony and closed the door.
“Maria, It’s midnight, why are you up?” I looked over at Sapphire to see the figure of a groggy human being sitting up.
“Can’t sleep” was my simple reply, in reality, I just wanted to look at the stars, to me, there has always been something written in them, I just can’t make out what that something is.
“You should really go to the doctors about that you know”
“You know I hate that place, it makes my skin crawl” I heard Sapphire sigh and get up, turning her bedside light on. We share a room in a flat because it was all I could afford at the time; I was working but it wasn’t paying enough. I was looking for another job but there weren’t any that I could apply for because I didn’t have the grades necessary.
Sapphire managed to persuade me to get in bed and go back to sleep. But, I couldn’t get the sight of the stars out of my mind. What was written in those stars? I wish I could make it out but I never will be able to. I’m just simply not clever enough.
When Sapphire and I were kids, we always went on holiday together, and wherever we went, we would take a picture of the stars in that place since we were always going abroad. I remember once, the sky was so clear, you could see the stars for miles. It was absolutely stunning. I haven’t seen another night like it since. The stars were so bright, so full of radiance, each having their own unique sparkle. People say that the night is a horrible time, it’s dark, dingy and dismal, but if they would just look up, they would see that the night time is actually a figure of beauty. To me, I prefer the night time over day time, just because of the stars.
