Chapter 6: Georgia
“Run.”“Huh?” I asked. My hearing was still kind of messed up.
Leo pulled my hand, and now we were both standing. Leo began to run. I now know what Leo said. There was one problem with that. My head was pounding, and I wasn’t quite sure I trusted myself to run. I tried to at least keep up with Leo, but it was really hard. I kept tripping, and I kept blacking out.
“Come on!” Leo shouted from in front of me.
“Does it not look like I’m trying?” I yelled rudely.
“Fine then!” Leo unexpectedly stopped and turned around. He grabbed me from my armpits and started carrying like a mother might carry a baby. I just went along with it.
He just kept running for what seemed like only a couple of minutes, but I think that I was just blacking out every couple of seconds. I started wondering why we were running. I realized what the power that you gain when you’re in the heart suit. Super Senses. Leo could hear, smell, and see something that I couldn’t. That’s just when my powers started kicking in. I could read Leo’s mind. I didn’t want to be invasive, but I couldn’t stop it.
I swear if this girl dies on me I don’t even know what I would do. She has been my only friend ever.
I was amazed. I didn’t think he cared that much. Now I felt like I wasn’t being nice enough. Now that I think about it, I’ve never had a friend before, and look at how I’m treating this one. I yelled at him and hit him.
Then I actually thought about what he was thinking about. Will I die? Did I get hurt that badly? There he goes, taking care of me and carrying me through the woods, probably away from danger.
Once we stopped I was alarmed because the reason we stopped is that Leo tripped over a root from a nearby tree. We had gotten back into a forest, thankfully it would be so much easier to hide here. Leo and I were in a pile on the ground, and instead of trying to get my stuff together, I started laughing. Then Leo joined in too.
We just sat there in a heap on the ground laughing. I guess if you and your only friend run away from home, almost die, then run through the woods for what seemed like miles, and run into a tree, it’s pretty funny. I scrambled to my feet and pulled Leo up with me, and I just hugged him.
I started to read his mind again.
I don’t even know what to think anymore! He thought. It feels good to have a friend to laugh with.
Even though it felt like the hug should’ve ended, I didn’t let go. Now that we were both here, and not in danger, I didn’t want to lose him. Or have him lose me. After almost two full minutes of us hugging, I let go and started to pick up the stuff that we dropped when we crashed.
“Hey, I know my powers have kicked in. Have yours? You better not be reading my mind!” Leo said in an almost happy voice.
“Nope!” I said embarrassed.
“Your entire face is red. You think I don’t know when people are lying!” Leo laughed.
“Sorry. I can’t help myself. I haven’t learned how to control my powers yet,” I said quietly. It seemed as if Leo had his entire life figured out, and I don’t even know how to use literally the only thing special about me.
“Then let’s practice!” Leo suggested.
“Are we out of danger?” I asked worriedly.
Leo stopped for a second. He was probably listening to the area around us. “I’m pretty sure,” Leo assured me.
We just practiced easy things like Leo would think of a number, and I would have to guess it. We also practiced my other power. Telekinesis.
“Okay. Try to lift this stick,” Leo said pointing at a stick that was lying on the ground. I closed my eyes and strained my mind. I had never actually tried to lift anything with my mind yet, but I needed to know how to control my powers if I wanted to complete the mission we were on.
Leo gasped, and I opened my eyes to see the whole tree vibrating, and trying to work its way out of the ground.
“Oh my gosh!” I said as I pulled my hand to my mouth, and tried to put the tree back on the ground.
“Get out of the way!” Leo called.
I was losing control of the tree. It was falling. I ran as fast as I could, but I wasn’t the one who needed to run. The tree fell in Leo’s direction. Leo fell to the ground, and I rushed to his side.
He was breathing. Thank God. I shook him and tried to wake him up.
He groaned and rolled over. “I don’t want to wake up yet!” He muttered sleepily.
“Oh, my freaking gosh!” I yelled. “Leo whatever-your-last-name-is! Stop scaring me!” I flopped onto my back. He didn’t have any problem falling asleep, but I was watching him, making sure that he was okay, all night long.
