Chapter 17: Leo
The ladder from the roof was long, but eventually, we both made it down. There wasn't grass on the ground this time, just concrete, which didn’t help when I landed on it with already sore feet. I could tell Georgia was in a little bit of pain too, so I grabbed the bags off her shoulders to take some weight off.
“Thanks,” She said. “It was starting to hurt.”
“Don’t worry,” I said, getting up to walk again.
We walked for a little while longer when Georgia said, “Do you ever think that we could have avoided this. Like, what would happen if I just never blew up that wall. Or if we never met.”
“What do you mean?” I asked, confused.
“I mean, what do you think would’ve happened if none of this never happened? Do you think we would’ve ever met?” She questioned.
“I honestly don't really know, but one thing I do know is that life would not have been nearly as great as it is right now.” I said, thinking of all the great times we’ve had so far.
Suddenly, my mind flashed back to a few days ago, shuffling through a bunch of fun times I'd had with Georgia. The first one was the hours after I got dragged into the pond by the creature. I saw us, laughing our heads off, joking around with each other. That was the first time I felt comfortable around her, let alone anyone in general.
It next showed me right after Georgia woke up after being knocked out. I saw her, in my arms, yelling at me and hitting me in the chest, and me just laughing it off. It was in 3rd person, so I could view everything. I could see the joy in both of our eyes, and how we were both having a great time.
The next scene I saw was the time where Georgia was practicing her telekinetic powers, and how we were both constantly joking with each other. I saw the tree fall just about on top of me, but I kept laughing until we fell asleep next to each other.
“Yeah,” I said as an afterthought,“not nearly as great…”
“Definitely!” she said happily.
We walked for a while in silence, both thinking about different things. When we got out of the Diamond’s land, the area quickly changed from desolate plains to a thick forest. I heard birds chirping, after a little while, I heard a soft trickle of a small creek not too far from where we were.
“Do you want to take a little break here?” I asked her, pointing to the stream of water.
“Sure,” she replied quickly, “maybe we could set up camp for the night here, then hopefully we can make it to the Club’s area tomorrow.”
I looked up at the sky, and saw that the sun was almost gone, even though I hadn’t noticed the light change until now.
“Yeah, I think that is a good idea Georgia,” I said, smiling warmly at her.
Suddenly, I heard faint muttering a few hundred yards away, by the creek. Even with my super senses, I really couldn’t make out what they were saying. There was one thing I could tell, which was that there were two people. But even with that, I was only assuming that there were two of them.
“Wait,” I whispered to Georgia. “I think there are some people over in the direction of the creek.” I saw she instinctively unshouldered the bow and got in a more willing position. I mentally thought, Yeah! That's my girl!
We crept up towards the place where I heard the murmuring from. At one point I thought I had given our position away by stepping on a dry twig, but they didn’t seem to notice. We finally got to a safe distance, and crouched behind a big bush. I peeked my head out to see them, but I could only see human features because of the way they were sitting. Georgia motioned me to follow her, as she had found a way to get closer where we were not out in the open for too long.
She was already halfway there when I started making my way over, making sure to be as silent as possible. Georgia had already found another bush to hide behind when I was just about all the way there. All of a sudden, one of the men turned and shouted.
“Hey! Who are you?” In an unfriendly voice. I didn't want to give away where Georgia was, so I sprinted the other way from where she was. They didn’t seem to notice where she was concealed, which was one good thing. The one who shouted at me started chasing me, and he caught up quickly. Soon enough, I was cornered at the side of a small cliff. I saw Georgia moving out of the corner of my eye, but I tried not to let the man meet my gaze.
I suddenly did something unexpected. I walked up to the man. Before he could react, I turned around, and ran straight at the cliff. I didn't even know what I was doing, but I was doing it. Right before I hit the sheer granite rock, I stuck my foot out and ran up the wall, then kicked off, landing behind the man.
Before I could do anything else, I saw Georgia slowly stand up from her new hiding place. She looked shocked, and was staring between the man who chased me and the other man.
She opened her mouth to speak, but seemed like she couldn’t say anything. I saw a tear stream down her face, and I saw her start to tremble a little bit. I ran to her side, but she kept staring at the two foreign people.
“Oh my god. Is that really you, Jamie and Dad?” She said quietly, then started crying in joy.
