Chapter 16: Georgia
“Hey, you kids!” A man called in a loud voice.I aimed the bow and shot. It was a good shot, but the man was faster. He jumped out of the way. I kept trying to distract him so Leo could walk up a bit closer to the man. I shot again, this time not really trying to hit him. All I needed to do was keep this man busy. I saw Leo get ready to weaken the man by hitting the man’s inner knee with the pommel of his dagger.
“Wait!” I screamed, trying to stop Leo.
The man whipped around to see Leo crouching down behind him. He grabbed Leo by his gray collar. Leo gave me a confused look.
“Okay, I know this sounds crazy, but I don’t think that any of us are the bad guys,” I said, trying to convince the man not to hurt us.
“What do you mean?” Leo asked, surprised.
“The Diamonds aren’t the bad guys,” I said, noticing the purple glint on the eyes of the man who had a hold of Leo.
“Leo! He’s being controlled!” I yelled, worried.
“Who would be hypnotizing him?” Leo asked, looking at the man's eyes.
“The Clubs,” I whispered to myself, finally seeing the connection.
“What?” Leo asked, not being able to hear me.
“The Clubs are mind controlling him!” I shouted. “The Clubs are controlling everything! We were wrong the whole time!”
The man seemed to snap out of it, “Help! I need help! You need to save us! The girl is right!”
He almost snapped back, but it seemed that he was fighting it. “Get out!” He yelled.
“We have to go!” Leo shouted, wiggling free from the man’s grip.
We both ran out of the room that we broke into. We ran through the building when I saw a staircase that went up. I decided to climb it.
“What the heck are you doing?” Leo asked in an alarmed voice. “Where are we going?”
“We’re fixing it,” I said, continuing to run up the long, spiraling staircase.
“Fixing what?” Leo asked, following me.
“Fixing what’s wrong,” I said quietly.
“What’s wrong?” Leo asked, cluelessly.
“Seriously?” I asked, stopping to turn around and look at him in his multicolored eyes.
“Just follow me,” I said, rolling my eyes.
We kept running up the stairs that were surprisingly a lot longer than I expected. We ran and ran for about three minutes until we saw the end. We sprinted up the last few stairs to a tall door at the end of the long hallway leading from the stairway.
“It’s locked,” Leo said disappointed.
“Thanks, captain obvious!” I said putting my ear to the door to check if anyone was behind it.
Once I had confirmed that there was nothing behind the mysterious door, I took the other bobby pin out of my hair and began to move it around inside the lock. I’ve seen Apollo do it a million times before. Although it took over three minutes, eventually the door popped open. We walked out to exactly what I thought was going to be there. It was a ladder leading to the roof of the Diamond building.
“Come on,” I said, gesturing to Leo to follow me up the ladder. We opened the trapdoor at the top of the short ladder.
“Okay, can you explain what we’re doing now?” Leo asked, stepping out with me.
“At school one day we were learning about mind control and hypnotism.” I explained.
“So?” Leo asked, not understanding what I was saying.
“So, we also learned how to snap them out of it,” I said, hoping that he would get the hint.
“And,” Leo said, still not understanding.
“And, we’re going to snap all of the hypnotized people in the Diamond suit out of their trance,” I said, explaining my whole plan.
“Oh,” Leo said, finally getting it. “So, how are we going to do that?”
“So I learned that if you create a certain frequency it can calm, reset, and reconstruct the thought process of the person hearing it,” I said, crouching down to the bottom of a flag post that was in the center of the roof. I looked at it and it had a box that I opened up, and inside there were wires, circuits, switches, and a lot of memory chips. From my research I knew that in these memory chips you can emit a sound loud enough for everyone in a 100 mile radius to hear.
I explained what we were going to do to Leo and we got to work.
First I rewired some things to make the frequency perfect for what we needed for our current situation. Then I made sure that all the memory chips were in the perfect position for this mission.
“Okay, all we have to do now is flip the switch. I’ll give you the honor,” I said to Leo.
“Okay then, are you ready?” Leo asked, making sure that everything was just right before he did something that couldn’t be reversed.
“Everything should be okay, but it might be really loud because we are right next to it,” I explained. “You might want to cover your ears.”
I plugged my ears with the palm of my hand, and Leo flipped the switch and put his hands to his ears as fast as he could. Surprisingly we couldn’t hear it.
“Maybe we should have put that into consideration. The noise is probably so high that we can’t hear it, but we can still process it,” I said, realizing why we couldn’t hear it.
“Yeah,” Leo agreed. “Well, I guess we should probably go now. Before all the people who have been hypnotized for years find two kids on top of a roof by themselves.”
“Yeah, that would probably be pretty confusing,” We laughed, picked up our stuff, and climbed back down the ladder.
Things were finally starting to come into focus.
