Chapter 3

At lunchtime that day, I sat with Mica. He saw that I was sitting alone, and came to join me.

"Why aren't you sat with your friends?" he asked me.

"What friends? I don't have any friends." I replied, taking a bite out of my tuna and sweetcorn sandwich.

"Really?" he said in surprise.

"Yes, really. Everyone hates me." I said.

"Why would anyone hate you? You're lovely." Mica said.

I held back a smile.

"Because I don't speak to people. Everyone thinks that I'm weird and pathetic just because I hardly ever talk." I said angrily.

"Well, that's stupid. People should get to know you before they judge you." Mica said.

"I know, but nobody ever does. That's why I don't like most people in this school." I told him.

"Well, I'll be here if you ever need someone." Mica replied with a smile.

I smiled back at him.

"Thanks." I said.

Then Mica looked around the room, and sighed.

"Everyone is the same here. There's nothing that makes them different." he said, shaking his head.

"I know." I said.

"It's actually quite sad." Mica said thoughtfully, then he turned to me.

"Victoria, what do you see when you look at the people in this school?" he asked me.

"I see a lot of ignorant brats." I muttered.

"I prefer to think of this school as a circus." Mica told me.

"A circus?" I asked.

"Yes, a teenage circus. The popular kids are the ringmasters, manipulating all the other performers. The sidekicks of the popular kids are the assistants." he explained.

I was surprised that he could think of something that deep. Then I thought of something.

"What are we?" I asked.

"Well. . ." Mica began.

"The circus freaks." I said, sighing.

Mica shook his head.

"No. . .We are not what they think we are." he said.

"Then what are we?" I asked.

"We are. . .golden." Mica answered with a smile.

"Golden?" I asked.

"Yes, golden. We are different and we stand out." he said.

"That is. . .amazing." I said.

Mica blushed slightly and looked at the floor.

"Thanks." he whispered.

"You're welcome." I said.
