----Horse Words----Ages:
mare- adult female horse
stallion- adult male horse
colt- male horse under 4
filly- female horse under 4
Anatomy:
mane- the long hair on their neck
forelock- the hair that comes down on a horse's forehead, like bangs
withers- where the top of the neck meets the back
flank(s)- where the belly meets the thigh/hind leg
crest- the top of a horse's neck
Gaits:
Horses have four basic gaits, or speeds - the walk, trot, canter, and gallop.
trot- faster than the walk, the trot has two beats - the right front and left hind land together, and the left front and right hind land together
canter- faster than the trot
gallop- the fastest gait, what racehorses do. Each hoof lands separately, like in the walk
Colors:
flaxen chestnut- brown coat with a creamy or silver mane and tail
palomino- golden coat, white mane and tail
bay- brown coat, black mane and tail
chestnut- brown coat, mane, and tail
Markings:
blaze- wide white stripe from a horse's forehead to their nostrils
pastern or sock- white from the hoof to the fetlock (the joint closest to the hoof)
Misc:
pricking their ears- it means their ear tips point forwards, in curiosity or interest. Fun fact: a horse's ears can turn 180 degrees using 10 different muscles.
