Chapter 2
Shadow Song reached the entrance to the portal, the MudWings trailing her by a small distance. The egg clutched in her front claws, she sped into the portal and flew out into the comforting volcanic region where the NightWings live.“BAT!” Shadow Song yelled out. A small NightWing with large wings soared out of a near cave, looking slightly groggy. But, as soon as he saw the colour of the egg Shadow Song was carrying, Bat grabbed a hollowed out bison horn from the satchel strapped to his back and blew into it, sounding a loud bellow into the air. Suddenly, darkly-coloured dragons leaped out from everywhere, all congregating around Shadow Song, who still clutched the egg close to her.
The crowd separated, and a large, beautiful NightWing came forth.
“Shadow Song, I see that you have recovered the egg. You are indeed a great double agent.” Shadow Song brightened at her praise. “Now, it is your duty to raise this egg, and then, we will see what to do with it.”
“Wait, what?” Shadow Song asked, her face darkened. “You didn’t say I would have to look after this thing! I know nothing about being a mom!” She gazed around the crowd for reassurance, but found none. When her gaze panned over to the queens glaring eyes, Shadow Song let out an “Eep!”, and nodded to accept her challenge.
“Well, I’m glad we got that settled. Go on, you must name it.” The NightWIng queen said with a flick of her tail.
Shadow Song closed her eyes and thought. The egg, clutched in her arms, rumbled, as though a storm was brewing inside of it. “Aella. I name her, Aella.” A storm at sea, Shadow Song thought.
“Yes, yes, well, off to business. Chop chop!” And with that, the NightWings were gone, off to do some reading or document something or other. But nothing as important as what Shadow Song had in her arms, yes, this one egg, deemed, Aella, would become the most important dragon in the entire world! But for now, it was just an egg named Aella. So, Shadow Song went up to her warm cave, and settled the egg into a nest of reed and feathers from owls that she slept in. After carefully laying herself around the egg, she closed her eyes, and slept.
