Chapter 1
“Claw marks. Two fully-grown dragons taking off to the West,” The NightWing dragon nodded to the setting sun. “Not SeaWings, or IceWings. Slight warmth to these ones. Probably SandWing or defective SkyWing, though one with too much fire would simply burn it,” The NightWing grunted and got up, stretching her dark purple wings to the sky.“Are you sure Shadow Song? These dragons are worth a lot of money,” The MudWing spread his wings and stood taller.
“I know, I know,” Shadow Song got up and squinted. “But if it is them, why would they be here, near SandWing territory?” She flapped her wings and soared into the sky and looked around. A hill… Knowing every prophecy that ever happened, the dragon egg is probably in a cave, in a hill. Shadow Song fluttered down and trotted towards the hill. Walking all around the base, she found a small ditch. Carefully edging into it, she heard the voice of her MudWing companion. Closing her ears, she shoved herself in deeper.
“Ow!” Shadow Song fell onto the floor with a crack. Getting up, she looked for broken bones. Her tail was bent at an odd angle. Wincing, Shadow Song looked at the gulch. It had widened and opened up, causing her to fall into a small cavern. Looking around, she saw a small nest with a single egg in it. It was black with silver and blue speckles. Gasping, she ran over to it, her tail banging painfully on the cave floor, but she didn’t notice. Because she had found what she was looking for. A hybrid egg.
“I’ve got the egg!” Shadow Song yelled up to the MudWing. She limped over to the gulch, trying not to hit her tail against the floor.
“Finally, lift the egg up to me, then I’ll pull you up.” Shadow Song narrowed her eyes.
He’s lying, isn’t he. Troop is just going to take the egg and leave me here. She growled under her breath. Shadow Song avoided his outstretched claws and managed to climb out herself while holding the egg.
Troop looked surprised, but quickly hid it. “Heh.” Shadow Song laughed quietly.
“Alright, enough dawdling, we have to deliver this. Oak, you carry the egg.” Troop beckoned to Shadow Song to give him the egg. She curled her arms tighter around it. No, I can’t give it to them, they would use it for destruction, I have to take it with me…
Shadow Song lifted up into the sky, beating her large black wings forcefully, gaining altitude.
“TRAITOR!” Troop screeched. The four MudWings lifted into the air, but the NightWing was already speeding off towards the NightWing kingdom’s portal in the rainforest. “We’ll never catch her, and if we enter the NightWing kingdom, we’re toast. We’ll have to cut her off before she reaches that portal. Get the egg at all cost, and DON’T LET IT BREAK!!!” And with that, the MudWings split and circled to the NightWing portal.
