Sibling love and rivalry
Lilac knocks at the door of Warren and Jane's house, she hadn't even put her hand down before Jane flings open the door. If it hadn't been an open-inwards sort of thing, Lilac would've been hit across the street. She give Jane a shaky smile."LILAC!" Jane squels, sweeping the purple hedgehog in for a hug. "GLAD TO SEE YOU!"
'Lilac, nice to see you too,' She signs, her lungs being slowly crushed by love. As she sets her down, Lilac gives Jane a look. 'You just saw me a couple of hours ago, though.'
"Yeah, yeah" she waves it off. "I'm just excited!"
Lilac smiles, Janes excitement catching up with her.
'Thanks! I'm excited to see what you've made for dinner. Speaking of which...' Lilac fumbles around in her backpack, pulling out a small paper bag. She waves it around excitedly. 'I brought brownies!'
Jane's face lights up, and Lilac can hear a chuckle from behind the small fox. Lilac's heart skips a beat as she leans around Jane to see Warren watching them both from the couch.
'What's so funny?' Lilac teases, coming over next to the couch.
“Well,” Warren glances around, seeing Jane vanish back into the kitchen. “between you and me, J hasn’t… improved that much since we moved a little while ago.”
"Improved?” She questions. Why does looking at him bring back memories of the stars?
“Well, back in the old place, Jane wanted to be a chef. Well, everything tastes pretty bad.” Warren looks around again, making sure Jane isn’t there to hear him. Lilacs still worried about Warren. Is he really okay? She fights the urge to check if he’s broken or bruised where he was hit.
“Mhm.” She murmurs absentmindedly, shooting a worried glance towards him.
He catches her gaze and flushes. “Lil, you okay?”
'I’m worried about you.' His cheeks turn a little reder. 'You got hit in the chest with a metal baseball bat, Warren! I’m…' She sighs shakily. 'I’m scared for you.'
Warren can feel his face flush, even though he knows the seriousness of the situation. It’s so strange. How easily some people can get attached. How easily he can get attached. Jane calls out from the kitchen, interrupting the moment.
“FOOD IS READY! LILAC, YOU MUST TRY THIS!” Warren chuckles, eager to get out of this awkward situation. He lifts himself off the couch and he offers a hand to Lilac to help her up. They both head towards the kitchen, and Warren pretends he can’t see the tears she wipes from her face.
Lilac sits in her chair facing the table, twirling her fork in her pasta soup to pick up as many noodles as she can. It’s pasta soup. Judging by the shocked expression she can vaguely see behind Warren's mask of emotions, this is not what he’s used to. Jane watches them both smugly, as if she knows something they don’t. Hesitantly, Lilac takes a bite. Bright, savory flavors burst in her mouth and she relaxs back into her chair, not wanting to rush the experience. Out of the corner of her vision she sees Warren take a bite as well, and he can’t hide his shock this time—instead of sinking into his chair, he starts to practically shovel food in his mouth.
“Warren, brother,” Jane giggles, obviously fighting a grin. “Dont make yourself sick.”
'You made this, Jane?' Lilac signs, twirling her fork around for another bite.
"Yeah, you sure this wasn't an impasta?" Warren asks jokingly.
“Funny!” Jane smiles at Lilac and Warren mischievously. “I’ve been taking classes to cook better! I want tyo own my own cafe one day so...surprise!”
Warren splutters.
“So you’ve been cooking bad on purpose?!” Jane chuckles.
“Only for the last few weeks.”
“If this food wasn’t so dang good, i’d kill you,” Warren mutters, shoving more pasta in his mouth. Lilac gives a laugh at that, and the rest of the night is spent enjoying good food and laughing at horrible jokes.
Glancing up at the clock—it’s really late. What is it—Sunday? Lilac don’t start work till Tuesday, right? Warren notices her gaze and hums to himself for a moment, in thought. “You could always stay for the night, Lil,” he says after a bit. She cringes inwardly. It feels like shes inviting herself over. “
'Would it be too much trouble?'
“Not at all Lilac!” Jane says joyfully. “…but you'd have to sleep on the couch.” Better than sleeping on the duffle bags again, Lilac thinks to herself. Plus, she'd probably be sleeping on the couch she has anyway. She smiles at the siblings.
'Sounds great, if you’re sure I won’t be a problem.'
“Lil, you’re just making this harder on yourself,” Warren chuckles. “I’ll help set up the couch.” Lilacs picks up plates, bringing them to the sink to wash them off. She and Jane watch Warren walk out into the living room, and she winces as she thinks of what it must be like to walk after being hit by a metal bat.
“Lilac...” Jane whispers. “Did something happen to Warren? Whats the situation he was on about?”
“Uh…” Lilac debates in her head. Warren should tell Jane. Not her.
'Don’t know the specifics. If you want to know, you should ask him.' Jane shakes her head.
“Warren is very to himself, doesn't tell anyone anything"
'Not even you?'
“Not even me.”
'But you’re his sister!'
“I know,” Papyrus clenches his fists. “I wish he would tell me whats bothering him, I don't know much but I think its somethng that should be taken seriously" Lilac finishes the dishes and sits back down at the table. Her heart aches for the poor fox.
"But, I think he may be getting better!" Jane brightens. "When you cam he helped me set things up instead of locking himself in his room"
'I assume he's there most of the time?' Lilac asks.
"Yep!" Jane nods enthusiastically. Lilac smiles. Jane is such a cinnamon roll.
'I'll go check on how he's doing,' The purple hedgehog says, standing up and walking towards the living room. She finds Warren sitting on the floor next to a bed with blankets and pillows. He blinks his eyes sleepily at her, and she laughs at his expression.
'C'mon, sleepyhead, time for bed.' She pushes him to his feet and towards the stairs, where shr assumes his room is. After a bit, everyone's situated. Lilac wraps herself in the blankets and lean back into the pillows, releasing a contented sigh. Her eyes close slowly, and she drifts off into sleep.
A muffled scream jerks Lilac awake. It's coming from one of the rooms upstairs. She wraps the blanket around her shoulders and trudge upstairs. You peek in the other door--it must be Jane's room. She's still asleep. Carefully, Lilac heads towards what must be Warren's room. She knocks on the door. When she hears no answer besides heavy breathing, she trys opening the door. It's locked. The door handle glows green, and she can hear the sound of a lock turning. She steps inside into the darkness.
