Eleven
This woman is blocking your way. You're grumpy and moody because you missed the bus and didn't get a proper breakfast and Mum made you clean your teeth and. This. Woman. Is. Blocking. Your. Way.You shove past her.
Something heavy slams into your back and you fall forward onto the road. The tarmac leaves your hands stinging and your skin dots the road like morbid snow. Turning, you see that the thing that hit you is in fact the woman. She is on top of you, a dead weight, eyes closed and not moving.
Oh god don't let her be dead.
But no, her chest moves a little, mearly unconscious then. Ah, okay. So there's a woman on top of you and she's unconscious and um she, um. Oh god. What do you do? Oh good god ohgodohgodohgod... stop it! You can't afford the luxury of panic. Remember your first aid.
Okay, the first thing you have to do is check for danger to yourself. You look around and realise that you're still in the middle of the road, a car could come by any minute! You wriggle out from underneath the woman and struggle to drag her to the footpath. She's heavier than her frail frame would suggest. As an afterthought you roll her into the recovery position.
Then, um, you're supposed to get help.
Dammit, in your rush you forgot to pack your phone this morning. Oh g -. No. You will not panic. You will... run back home and call an ambulance from there. Yes.
You turn and start jogging. You slow to a walk. You stop.
You seem to recall from your bus rides that there is a pay phone up the road in the other direction. If you're right then it could be much closer than home. It could make the all difference for this mystery woman. But if you're wrong...
~ Do you take the chance & turn around?
~ Or start running again. Home.
