The Races

I guess I didn't really notice the seat next to me was empty now, whoever had been sitting there left. A girl with hair so blonde it was almost white and eyes the same color of blue as the surrounding sky moved from her seat in the row behind mine to sit in the empty front seat. "
"Hi, I'm Taylor," she said cheerfully. The girl, Taylor looked like she was fifteen, maybe her birthday hadn't passed yet like mine?

"I'm already fifteen," Taylor said seeming to sense my confusion, "My birthday is today, but my parents want me to sit in the 10-14 row just once more to keep watch over my little brother. He's still ten. I really don't mind it though, I haven't had my Festival yet some I'm not really an official fifteen-year-old."
"I'm Celine, my birthday's tomorrow! I bet that means we'll have the same Festival night!" I say excitedly. I barely know this girl, but she seems like someone I might want as a friend.

"Awesome! You'll have to HoloChat me later, my full name is Taylor Ven, I'm the only Taylor Ven in the city so I'll be easy to find on the search screen," Taylor tells me. I nod. The Races are starting, and the Racers are in there positions. Taylor and I lean forward so we can be even closer to the action, since all spectators are in seats high above the track so we can see the whole course. A loud sound pierces through all the chatter, and the Racers are off.

I stare fascinated as their hovering shoes make them look like they have invisible wings, defying gravity just by sheer will. I know it's all complicated science, but I'd rather just watch the Racers speed along the track than think to hard. A girl with hair such a bright red you could never miss her speeds ahead of the rest, but when she comes to a part where there's a sharp turn, a girl with brown hair speeds ahead. I recognize her from watching The Races on TV, that's Skylar Night, the second best Racer out of everyone! Twin boys, the Gemini I read about in the program are closing in on her, while the red haired girl is valiantly trying to gain on them. Again, she's caught against a sharp turn and falls behind a boy with platinum blonde hair. The part of the track that Skylar and the Gemini boys have reached looks like a wall, one that I know will take a ton of energy to climb, even with the setting on the hover shoes built for this part of The Races. Skylar doesn't hesitate to begin running up, and the same goes for one of the Gemini boys. But I can tell the other one is nervous. He must have been bad at this obstacle in training. The leaves room for another racer, the red haired girl, to catch up and begin her climb. The blonde boy and another racer with hair as dark as night is making his way to the wall too. The Gemini boy slowly but steadily makes his climb, determined to reach the top. The boy with jet black hair passes by the blonde boy mid-way up the wall, and finally the last racer, a girl with light brown hair reaches the wall and begins her climb.

Skylar reaches the top of the wall first, and the finish line is in sight for her. She pauses a moment to catch her breathe, but that's just the amount of time one of the Gemini twins needs to pass her. Though I know Skylar won't give up that easily. This part of the track leading to the finish has tons of elevated points, some not much more than two feet, others up to ten. The Gemini boy makes the same mistake SKylar did, catching his breathe at the top of a hill, and Skylar passes him right when he least suspects it. The boy does't react as well as Skylar did, and is so surprised the red-haired girl and the other Gemini boy manage to pass him in a split second. Skylar reaches the finish line first to an enormous amount of cheers, the sound is almost deafening, but Taylor and I happily join in.The Gemini boy who Skylar passed must have gotten ahead when I wasn't looking, and makes it to second place within moments of Skylar finish. The red-haired girl and the other Gemini boy finish together, and I can't tell who won. The girl with light brown hair finishes just ahead of the blonde boy.

"What a race that was..." I yell the Taylor over the noise.
"Taylor nods enthusiastically, while we both cheer for the winners.
