Chapter 8
I pulled on my turtle-neck pajama top and sweatpants and walked out into the ballroom, where sleeping bags were strewn about. I sat on my sleeping bag, stationed between Blake, sitting against the wall reading a book, and Yang and Ruby, the latter writing in a journal. Yang crashed down next to Ruby wearing a crop top and shorts.“It’s like a big slumber party!” she exclaimed. Ruby didn’t look up.
“I don’t think Dad would approve of all the boys, though.” Yang looked around.
“I know I do!” I chuckled to myself as I thought of what Adam would say if he knew how many shirtless guys were around me. “What’s that?”
“A letter to the gang back at Signal,” Ruby said. “I promised to tell them all about Beacon and how things are going.” Yang smiled.
“Aw, that’s so cuuuute!” Ruby threw a pillow at her sister.
“Shut up! I didn’t get to take my friends with me to school! It’s weird not knowing anyone here!” I nodded.
“I didn’t go to any of those big training schools, and none of my friends came with me. I know how that feels.” Yang shook her head.
“What about Jaune?” she asked. “He’s . . . nice. There you go! Plus one friend! That’s a hundred percent increase!” Ruby sighed.
“Pretty sure Weiss counts as a negative friend. Back to zero . . .” Yang scoffed.
“There’s no such thing as negative friends! You just made one friend and one enemy!” Ruby hit Yang with another pillow. “Look, it’s only been one day. Trust me; you’ve got friends all around you! You just haven’t met her yet.” Ruby looked behind me to where Blake was reading a book by candlelight.
“That girl . . ,” Ruby started. Yang looked.
“You know her?”
“Not really. She saw what happened this morning, but she and-” She looked at me. “-you left before I could say anything.” Yang looked at me.
“Do you know her, Aria?” I nodded.
“We knew each other as kids.” Yang smiled.
“Well, Ruby, now’s your chance to get to know her!” Yang grabbed Ruby’s arm and pulled her towards Blake, me in tow.
“Wait!” Ruby exclaimed. “What are you doing?!” Blake looked up as I walked over and sat next to Blake. We watched Ruby unsuccessfully struggle against Yang’s grip.
“Hel-loooooo!” Yang exclaimed, singing. “I believe you two may know each other?”
“Aren’t you . . . that girl that exploded?” Blake asked. I held back a laugh, almost successfully.
“Uh, yeah!” Ruby said. “My name’s Ruby! But you can just call me Crater . . .” -She smiled, embarrassed- “Actually, you can just call me Ruby.” Blake looked back at her book, me looking over her shoulder.
“Okay.” Yang started whispering to Ruby.
“What are you doing?”
“I don’t know - help me!” Yang looked at Blake.
“So . . . what’s your name?”
“Blake,” she said, annoyed to be distracted again. Yang smiled.
“Well, Blake, I’m Yang, Ruby’s older sister!” she said. “I like your bow!” I could tell Blake was irritated.
“Thanks!” she said with false enthusiasm.
“It goes great with your . . . pajamas!”
“Right . . .” Ruby laughed uncomfortably.
“Nice night, don’t you think?” Yang asked.
“Yes!” Blake exclaimed. “Almost as lovely as this book!” Ruby and Yang continued to stand there. “That I will continue to read.” They really didn’t get the hint. “As soon as you leave!” Yang looked at her sister as we continued to read the book.
“Yeah, this girl’s a lost cause.”
“What’s it about?” Me and Blake looked up, surprised.
“Huh?” Ruby shrugged.
“Your book. Does it have a name?” Blake nodded, hesitantly.
“Well . . . i-it’s about a man with two souls, each fighting for control over his body.” Yang rolled her eyes.
“Oh, yeah,” she said sarcastically. “That’s real lovely!”
“I love books,” Ruby said. “Yang used to read to me every night before bed. Stories of heroes and monsters . . . They’re one of the reasons I want to be a Huntress.” I scoffed.
“And why is that?” I asked. “Hoping you’ll live happily ever after?” I knew I shouldn’t act like I feel, but I couldn’t help it. I knew Blake was thinking the same thing.
“Well,” Ruby started, “I’m hoping we all will.” I was surprised. “As a girl, I wanted to be just like those heroes in the books . . . Someone who fought for what was right, and protected people who couldn’t protect themselves.”
“That’s very ambitious,” Blake started.
“For a child,” I muttered, finishing her sentence. Blake nodded, frowning.
“Unfortunately, the real world isn’t the same as a fairy tale.” Ruby nodded.
“Well, that’s why we’re here! To make it better.” Yang tackled her sister in a hug.
“Oh, I am so proud of my baby sister!” Ruby kicked at her sister.
“Cut it out!” The sisters started fighting as me and Blake laughed.
“Well, Ruby, Yang, it’s a pleasure to ha-” She didn’t finish as Weiss Schnee stormed over. I gritted my teeth. Blake must have sensed it because she gently placed her hand on mine. It took all I had to not flinch away.
“What in the world is going on over here?!” she yelled. “Don’t you realize some of us are trying to sleep?” Yang and Weiss looked at each other.
“Oh, not you again!” they yelled. Ruby quickly shushed the two girls.
“Shh! Guys, she’s right! People are trying to sleep!” Weiss shook her head.
“Oh, now you’re on my side!”
“I was always on your side!” Yang nodded.
“Yeah, what’s your problem with my sister?” she asked. “She’s only trying to be nice!”
“She’s a hazard to my health!” I gestured to the candle, and Blake blew it out.
