Chapter 14
“How could you leave me?!?!” Weiss yelled to Ruby.“I said ‘jump’,” she muttered.
“She’s gonna fall,” Blake said. I shook my head.
“She’ll be fine.” I honestly kinda wanted the brat to fall.
“She’s falling,” Ren said. Jaune jumped out of a tree and caught her, only to be falling with her. He face planted onto the ground, and Weiss landed perfectly on his back.
“My hero,” she said sarcastically. I gritted my teeth lightly.
“My back . . ,” Jaune muttered. The ginger running from the Deathstalker managed to make her way over to us as Weiss walked up to Ruby.
“Great!” Yang exclaimed. “The gang’s all here! Now we can die together!” Ruby shook her head.
“Not if I can help it,” she said. She yelled and ran toward the Grimm.
“Ruby, wait!” Yang yelled. Ruby fired Crescent Rose toward the Deathstalker, only to be swiped away.
“D-d-don’t worry!” Ruby yelled. “Totally fine!” She turned around and shot the Deathstalker in the skull, running away from it and sheathing Crescent Rose as the Deathstalker followed her. Yang ran forward, trying to help her younger sister.
“Ruby!!!” Suddenly, the Nevermore flapped its wings and releashed lines of sharp feathers that caught on Ruby’s cape and trapped Yang. “Ruby, get out of there!!” Ruby tugged on her cape, trying to get it unstuck.
“I’m trying!” The Deathstalker approached and raised its stinger, ready to strike.
“Ruby!!” Yang yelled. Weiss ran forward, just as the stinger came down, and I followed not a second later. Weiss encased the Deathstalker’s stinger in ice, and I bent down next to Ruby and began clawing at the cape to get her unstuck.
“You are so childish,” Weiss said.
“Weiss?” Ruby asked, even more shocked than I was that she was willing to help. Weiss continued.
“And dimwitted, and hyperactive, and don’t even get me started on your fighting style.” She sighed. “And I suppose I can be a bit . . . difficult . . . but if we’re going to do this, we’re going to have to do this together. So if you’ll quit trying to show off, I’ll be . . . nicer.” Ruby sighed.
“I’m not trying to show off,” she said. “I want you to know I can do this.” Weiss shook her head.
“You’re fine.” She walked away as I finished cutting off a piece of red cloth off of Ruby’s cape and helped her up off the ground. Ruby let out a sigh and closed her eyes.
“Normal knees,” she whispered. She looked around the wall of ice to the Deathstalker that was desperately trying to free itself. “Woah!” I had to give Weiss points for style, but that was it. Yang ran up and wrapped Ruby in a hug.
“I’m so happy you’re okay!” She looked at me and smiled, and we looked up at the Nevermore.
“Guys?” Jaune yelled to us as we ran back over. “That thing’s circling back! What’re we gonna do?” Cam nodded.
“Yeah, you’re the ones with the plans,” she said. Weiss shook her head.
“Look, there’s no sense in dilly-dallying,” she said. “Our objective is right in front of us.” We looked at the relics. Ruby walked over to Weiss.
“She’s right,” she said. “Our mission is to grab an artifact and make it back to the Cliffs. There’s no point in fighting these things.” Jaune smiled slightly.
“Run and live,” he said. “That’s an idea I can get behind.” Ruby, Tyson, and Jaune each walked up to the relics. Ruby grabbed a white knight, Jaune grabbed a white rook, and Tyson grabbed a black queen identical to mine and Cam’s. Why there were two, I have no idea. We smiled at each other, but I heard a crack as the Deathstalker continued to try and free itself.
“Time we left,” Ren told everyone. Ruby nodded.
“Right,” she said. I waved to the others.
“Let’s go!” We all ran toward the cliffs until we reached more ruins and the Nevermore passed overhead. We hid ourselves behind various stones.
“Yeah, well that’s great!” Yang yelled. We looked back as the Deathstalker burst onto the scene.
“Ah, man,” Jaune said, clearly scared. “Run!” We emerged from our hiding spots, drawing the attention of the Nevermore.
“Nora!” Ren yelled. “Distract it!” We attempted to fight the two Grimm before running across the stone bridge. Suddenly, the Nevermore used its huge wings to break the bridge in two, leaving Kiyoshi, Ren, Pyrrha Nikos (who was partnered with Jaune), Blake, and I on one side of the gap and Ruby, Yang, Weiss, Jaune, Nora, Cam, and Tyson on the other side.
We attempted to continue to fight the Deathstalker as the others made their way over to us. As we fought, Ruby, Blake, Yang, and Weiss trying to fight the Nevermore, I noticed the Deathstalker’s stinger getting weaker. When it looked like it was about to fall off, I hit Jaune in the arm to get his attention.
“Jaune!” I exclaimed. I pointed to the stinger. “Look!” He nodded.
“Pyrrha!!” She nodded.
“Done.” She threw her shield like a discus and cut off the stinger. I looked at Nora’s hammer and my cuffs, then up at Nora.
“Nora!” I yelled. “Let’s nail it!” She nodded.
“Heads up!” She jumped on Pyrrha’s shield, shooting herself into the air, while I simply shot myself up. We fell down, and I punched the Grimm while Nora hit it with her hammer. Yeah, it was definitely dead. As we caught our breath, we watched Ruby run up the side of the cliff, the blade of Crescent Rose caught around the Nevermore’s throat. When she reached the top, its head was severed in a shower of rose petals. As it fell, we watched in amazement.
“Wow,” Jaune muttered. I nodded, in awe of the young girl’s strength. Yang looked at us.
“Well,” she said. “That was a thing.”
“Russel Thrush. Cardin Winchester. Dove Bronzewing. Sky Lark,” Professor Ozpin listed off. The screen of the auditorium showed each of their profiles as the boys lined up for the applauding audience to see as Ozpin continued. “The four of you retrieved the black bishop pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team CRDL (Cardinal), led by . . . Cardin Winchester!” The audience clapped again as Jaune, Pyrrha, Ren, and Nora walked up.
“Jaune Arc. Lie Ren. Pyrrha Nikos. Nora Valkyrie. The four of you retrieved the white rook pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team JNPR (Juniper).” Amid the clapping, Nora laughed and gave Ren a hug. “Led by . . . Jaune Arc!” I was shocked. He didn’t really seem like a fighter. Pyrrha offered a friendly punch to the shoulder, but instead, Jaune fell . . . in front of everyone. Cam, Tyson, Kiyoshi, and I walked up next.
“Cameron Tyler. Kiyoshi Itsitakho. Aria Layn. Tyson Aarons. The four of you retrieved the black queen pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team ACTK (Arctic). Led by . . . Aria Layn!” I smiled. Being a student was one thing, but being a team leader would make things even easier. Suddenly, I was tackled in a hug by Cam. I smiled, however uncomfortable I was, and hugged her back. We walked back, and a girl with black and blue hair and brown eyes, a girl with brown hair and brown eyes, a girl with black and pink hair and one hazel eye and one brown eye, and a boy with golden hair and blue eyes took our places.
“Zoe Grace. Alisen Wind. Jason Haynes. Gabby Bright. The four of you retrieved the white king pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team JAGZ (Jaguars). Led by . . . Jason Haynes.” As my eyes met Zoe’s (the dark-skinned girl with black and blue hair and brown eyes), I made a mental note to myself to find a way to talk to that team. They walked down and Ruby, Blake, Yang, and Weiss walked up.
“And finally: Blake Belladonna. Ruby Rose. Weiss Schnee. Yang Xiao Long.” He motioned over to the four girls. “The four of you retrieved the white knight pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team RWBY (Ruby). Led by . . . Ruby Rose!” Weiss looked to her right, surprised, where Ruby stood, obviously in shock as Yang hugged her.
“It looks like things are shaping up to be an . . . interesting year.”
