Chapter 15
As soon as I woke up on our first day of classes, I shoved the covers off my head and stuck my foot out behind me, kicking Cam in the shin.“Ow!” she yelled, which made Kiyoshi sit straight up in bed and Tyson groaning as he rubbed his eyes.
“Get up!” I exclaimed. “Class!” All three jumped up and started getting ready as I did the same, but way slower. As Cam pulled on her shoes, she looked up at me.
“What time does class start?” I looked at my watch.
“Nine o’clock.” She looked at the clock on the wall, then back at me.
“It’s only eight thirty!” Tyson exclaimed. I nodded. “You said class was about to start!” I shook my head.
“I never said anything about a time,” I said. “I just acknowledged that we have class this morning.” I pillow was thrown into my face, and I looked over to see Cam stick her tongue out at me. Kiy clapped, and I looked at him.
‘That’s not okay, man’ he signed. I smiled.
“Uh, what?” Cam asked. I sighed.
“This gon’ be real difficult if you two can’t communicate,” I said. I pointed at Ty. “You, work on teaching Cam sign language.” I pointed at Cam. “You, please don’t throw pillows at my head.” I pointed at Kiy. “And you, you’re in charge.”
‘Where are you going?’ I smiled.
“I’m gonna go take a walk before class,” I told him. “There’s someone I wanna meet.”
“You’re such a natural leader,” Cam said. “Where did you learn to take charge like that?” My smile dropped as I thought of Adam. It wasn’t that I hated thinking about him, like I had to pretend. It was just that I missed him.
“An old friend,” was all I said before walking out. I walked out into the courtyard, where Zoe was sitting alone on a bench. “Hey.” She spun around and looked me in the eye.
“Hey,” she said. “Aria, right?” I nodded. “I’m Zoe.” I smiled and sat next to her.
“Where’s the rest of your team?”
“Where’s yours?” I smirked and looked straight forward.
“Yeah, I think we’ll get along just fine.” She smiled. “My team’s getting ready, trying to learn sign language.”
“Say what now?” I chuckled.
“Kiyoshi Itsitakho. He’s mute. Me and Tyson Aarons know sign language, but Cameron Tyler doesn’t, so Ty’s trying to teach her.” She nodded.
“My team’s . . . somewhere. I wanted some time alone.” I smiled.
“Sorry.” She shrugged. “I get that though. This friend I had, we were like siblings. We got along most of the time, but when we didn’t, I just wanted space. I never wanted to fight with him.” I sighed and looked at the ground. “Guess it’s unavoidable now.”
“Zoe!” we heard. I looked up to see the rest of team JAGZ. Jason was the one who had spoken. “Oh! Sorry! Aria, right?” I nodded. “I’m Jason.” I smiled and got a better look at him. He was a bit taller than me with gold hair that was about the length of mine and stunning blue eyes. He was wearing a white dress shirt under a grey vest with matching dress pants and black boots. A girl with shoulder-length brown hair and strange eyes (kind of blue and brown and grey and green all at the same time) walked forward. She was wearing a black dance leotard with mesh shoulders, blue jeans, and black sneakers.
“I’m Alisen,” she said. “Alisen Wind.” I smiled. Then, a girl with hair similar to Zoe’s, only with pink instead of blue, one hazel eye, one brown eye, and an orange fox tail and ears walked forward.
“Gabby Bright,” she said in a powerful voice. “What’s your semblance? I heard team CFVY talking about it. Cocoa said she thought you had the most useful semblance she’d ever seen.” I blushed.
“I’m a shapeshifter,” I said. “What about you guys?” Jason smiled.
“I call mine silk,” he said. “It sounds stupid, I know. It pretty much means I can do just about anything without messing up. Whether it be fighting, dancing, or just walking.” Gabby nodded.
“He even falls gracefully,” she said sarcastically. He stuck his tongue out at her. “I can create and harness fire. Not very unique, unfortunately.” Alisen scoffed.
“At least yours is useful,” she said. “All I can do is manipulate probability. I can add up to a ten percent probability of success, or failure if I want.” I nodded and looked at Zoe.
“I can manipulate shadows,” she said. “It’s similar to Ray Sein’s, oh, he’s a boy from team CRML (Caramel). They’re a year older than us. Ray can control light, but if there’s no light, he can’t do much. If I’m in a room with no light at all, I can remove the shadows from the room, and essentially give light, even though there’s not actually any in the room.” I nodded.
“Well, I can’t actually do much with my semblance,” I told them. “I can’t change into a person, and no matter what I am, my eyes are always red and blue.” They nodded.
“Even with that said,” Jason said, “you probably still have the most powerful semblance here. You can change into different animals to gain an advantage, can’t you?” I nodded. “Can you change into a Grimm?” I shrugged.
“I don’t really want to try that, especially not here, for fear that I might get killed.” They nodded. “Where’s your first class?” Jason looked at his scroll.
“Doctor Oobleck’s history class at nine,” he said. I smiled.
“Me too!” I said cheerfully, almost authentically. “My whole team does. You guys will love them . . . if they decide to behave.” Gabby laughed as we headed to class.
