Day One
"Wake up!" A voice hissed at me. Hands shook my shoulders wrenching me out of my already uneasy sleep."What?" I barked before a hand slammed down on my mouth. My Dauntless instincts kicked in and before I realized what I had done I had pinned my "attacker" to the wall. This woke Lillith and Cal. The person was clearly Candor and so I dropped them to the floor. "You shouldn't wake people like that." I grumbled.
Regaining her stature the lean woman looked at us. "You are going to the Testing Room."
"What time is it?" Lillith asked.
"3:46." The woman said briskly. "Get ready and be out in the hall by 4." She exited with one smooth swoop.
"4. Geez." Cal grumbled. We all put on our black and white outfits. I was in a white tank with a black cardigan over a black skirt. The skirt was uncomfortable to me but skirts were the only thing provided. I tugged down nervously on the hem as we filed into the hall. People had already lined up and were whispering groggily.
"What are we doing?" I heard from down the hall.
The woman re-appeared and said "Your first test starts now." She nodded at a boy who was about three people away from me. "Him first." As she said this two men formed from the shadows and escorted the boy down the hall. We waited quietly and in less than three minutes he reappeared but with tears streaking his face. The next people to go in returned similarly shaken. "Her." The woman motioned toward me and the men came close behind me. Suddenly one slammed my shoulder into the cold wall.
"How do you feel?" The man pinning me screamed into my face. Flustered, my thoughts scrambled in my brain until finally I realized what was happening.
"I feel pain in my shoulder, angered that your holding me against the wall, and afraid you'll hurt me." The man smiled at me then roughly let me go. The other led me down a separate hallway.
My senses were on the high but all that happened was he said "How did you feel when we woke you up early?"
"Tired and annoyed."
"What had you been doing?"
"Sleeping."
"How's the skirt?"
"Frilly," I could feel his un-satisfaction in the air and I slowly said, "Short." He opened a door into darkness. Unafraid, I entered. He closed the door.
"Vera, Congratulations. You are the only one to make it this far in your class. Why do you think this happened?"
"Cause I'm smart and I can figure out what's going on."
"Good" the voice cooed. "You've earned yourself a higher spot in the rankings." Then the lights turned on and I was back in our room. Lillith and Cal were both clearly rattled and whispering.
"Vera! Oh my gosh, I thought they kicked you out!"
"What? Why?"
"Cause some people haven't returned at all yet and they said this was the first year real cuts had been made!" My eyes grew wide in surprise.
"What? Why?" I asked.
"Because some people really failed while others succeeded more then anyone else has!"
