Phone call with "Grandma"
RIIIIIIIING. RIIIIIIIIIIIIIING. RIIIIIIIIIIIING. Tapping my fingers on the wooden table, I plead Allison to pick up. Finally the ringing stops and I hear whispering voices in the background and then a muffled “Hello?”“Um, hi… This is Megan.”
“Oh hello dearie! I’ve heard a lot about you!”
“Uh, cool…”
“What’s your name again? Sorry, I’m getting old, and as they say, with oldness comes memory loss.”
Nobody says that, I think to myself as I say, “I’m Megan. Walter’s sister.”
I wait patiently while Allison’s Grandmother says “Ah.”
It’s hard being the older sister of the most famous boy in town.
“I made you cookies!”
“That’s great. Look, can I speak with Allison?”
“I AM Allison.”
Of course. I roll my eyes. Allison will be Allison. “Umm, right, sorry. As they say, with oldness comes memory loss. Ha… Ha…”
“Nobody says that.”
“But you- Grandma- Nevermind. Allison, I was calling because I need your help. Wow, I can’t believe I just said that.”
“...”
I explain Walter’s dream.
Then I wait until Allison faints, becomes conscious again, drinks a glass of water, finishes her knitting project, and then remembers she is on the phone.
“Wow! And Megan, Walter is always right with his predictions.”
“Well, he’s never wrong.”
“I guess I’ll help.”
And I explain the plan.
