Unbelievable
No.No.
I felt the phone slip from my hands, but I didn't move to pick it up. I barely even heard it hit the floor. My mind was going a million miles an hour, but I couldn't make out a single word my mom was saying.
Finally, through the fog in my mind, I heard my mom talking to my sister.
"Yeah. Okay, I can be there in just few minutes. I know Thomas didn't mean to. How is he? Oh dear. Oh wow. We're on our way," she hung up. "Kasey, put on some clothes and let's go. Lucas is hurt pretty bad."
Five minutes later, I was in a pair of jeans and an old t-shirt. Not that it mattered what I was wearing, I barely even looked at myself before hopping into the car. Lucas was all that mattered. I didn't know how badly he was hurt, or what exasctly happened. But it didn't matter. Sure, me and Lucas had a bunch of rough patches. He had hurt me, broken my heart, lied to me. But I loved him. As much as I hated to admit it, I was still madly in love with him. And if what he said on the bleachers was true, then he loved me too.
"Kasey, your father said he would meet us there," my mom told me as we sped past a stop sign. "Listen, Kasey. I know how much Lucas means to you, but don't forget what happened. What he did was horrible. Just don't let any of this mask your judgement."
I nodded.
The hospital came into view.
My mom had Teresa on the phone, asking where to park and where to go.
Next thing I knew,m we were in the waiting room on the third floor. It smelled like disinfectant, and the walls were sky blue, which was a deep contrast to the storm raging inside me. Teresa was holding Maria in her arms, Thomas was beside her, his eyes red and his body tense.
I saw Lucas's parents out of the corner of my eye, talking to a doctor. His mom looked like she had been sobbing all morning, his father looked strained to say thse least.
Me and my mom took a seat across from Thomas and Teresa.. Thomas nodded at me, as if he was unable to speak. Teresa leaned over, handing Maria to Thomas who looked grateful to have something to hold on to. Teresa reached across and took my hand.
"Thomas was driving home from work when it happened," she tightened her grip on my hand.
Oh God.
"He was waiting at a stoplight, then it turned green. When he went to go, someone decided to run the red light. Thomas reacted, and jerked the wheel over. he didn't even notice Lucas pull up beside him. Lucas must have reacted to, becuase he pulled off the road and crashed into a tree to avoid getting hit," Teresa let out a shaky breath. "We don't know his condition. The doctors won't tell us anything."
I nodded, tears already starting to form in my eyes. "Was it bad?"
Teresa stayed silent. "It was really bad."
Tears fell into my lap.
I heard the elevator chime, and heard the newly familiar voice of my dad ask what had happened.
I didn't listen to Teresa repeat the story. I just leaned back, and closed my eyes, trying to get rid of the mental picture of Lucas's car wrapped around a tree.
"Teresa?" I asked.
She came to sit in the chair beside mine. "Yes?"
"What if he's going to die?" I asked as a sob shook my body.
"I don't know," her voice was thick.
"He can't die. He can't."
She ran her hands through my hair.
"Teresa. I still love him. I love him so much. He can't die, because he doesn't know that I still love him."
"Even after everything that happened?"
"He was the only one who saw me. Before I met him, I couldn't talk to anyone. I didn't have any friends. I was invisble, but he saw me for me. And before I met him, I didn't know what it felt like to love someone so much, that you didn't know what you would do if they ever disappeared. I really don't want to know what that feels like."
"Then have faith, Kasey."
*****
Maybe an hour later, I heard Lucas's mom call my name. They were stanging in the hallway, away from everyone.
I got up and walked to them.
Lucas's mom pulled me into a hug. It felt like she was trying to squeeze the air out of my lungs, but I didn't mind.
"Thank you for coming.. Thank you thank you thank you," she said into my hair.
I nodded. "I still care about him as much as I used to."
She pulled back. "But he's done some horrible things to you Kasey."
"That doesn't matter."
She gave a small smile. "The doctor talked to us."
"How is he?' I braced myself
"He'll live."
I started crying again.
"But he had a really bad head injury. We won't know the extent of it until he wakes up."
I nodded. "So what do we do?"
"We wait."
