Chapter 12
After the little moment of embarrassment, things were going fine. I had danced with a few men, drank a few drinks and demolished a bunch of grapes. But where was Alex? A warm hand lands on my shoulder and a familiar voice rings in my ears. "Clara, we need to talk." I turn around and hug Alex tight. "FINALY!" He doesn't hug me back. I step back, confused. "We need to talk." He repeats. My eyes wander over him. He's wearing a shirt and tie but he's ditched the breeches and gone for a pair of crisp trousers. I deliberately play dumb. "We are talking." "We need to talk, alone."He leads me outside to the darkness. "Alex?" My voice comes out shrill and high-pitched.
"I'm sorry, I just don't think it will work out anymore. Our lives are too different."
"Huh? What? Why? You seemed fine with it a minute ago!"
He sighs, raking his hands in his hair.
"I know! I cept on convincing my self it was fine, always ignoring the rational side or the niggling doubt. I'm sorry."
Tears blur my vision. "B-But! You were flirting with me first! You started it!"
"I know and I'm so sorry. I was in love, I guess."
"So why do you have to do this? You're in love! Or are you really?"
"I am! You've got to believe me, but it's too risky. Clara, I've never told you before but, seeing us hanging around, I could get killed and you would lose your reputation, be looked down forever. We're lucky it hasn't happened so far."
"I want to be with you!" I scream and fling myself into his arms. He pushes me back. "Clara, please! Don't make this any harder-"
Desperate, I cling onto him but he pushes me off again.
"Why are you doing this?"
"It's too risky! Clara, it's only because I truly care about you that I'm doing this!"
I try not the show my emotions and curl my lip into a sneer."Whatever. Your just a servant boy..."
And that's how I know it's finally the end between us.
