My Prince (part 2-Cinderella)
It was my turn to do the dishes, which I hated more than any other chore around the house. Because Loki hated it equally as much, we had decided that we would shift the job between the two of us. He was out in the living room, sifting through the assortment of movies we could watch. He had declared fridays our official movie nights after the dragon incident. I hadn’t shown him anymore princess movies, half because I wasn’t really that fond of them myself (I was familiar with the original stories and preferred those) and half worried that he would get himself killed trying to reenact princely stunts. The vial of dragon blood had been set carefully on my shelf and I practically forced him to let me help him with his cuts and bruises. Nonetheless, he seemed content with his little adventure, though he would never tell me how he did it or where he had gotten a dragon from.“This one.” He declared, dropping the case on the counter beside me. I glanced at it, then had to look again. Cinderella? Seriously?
“Cinderella? Seriously?” I asked.
“Yes.” He said firmly “It has a princess.” I laughed at this and gestured for him to put the stack of dishes on the counter away.
“It’s boring.” I said “You won’t like it.”
“Nonsense.” He replied.
“Don’t you want to watch something else?”
“No.”
“Really?”
“Truley.”
“Alright, whatever,” I said, shrugging “but don’t be upset if I fall asleep.”
“Noted.” He said, smiling at me “Can we have popcorn?”
“Sure.” I said. He beamed at me and began making the preparations while I finished up the dishes. I knew that this particular prince didn’t exactly do anything overly heroic, so I wasn’t too concerned. Although, I was a little anxious that he would beg me to get a pumpkin so could try and change it into various objects.
“Who is your favorite character in this one?” He asked me, looking over his shoulder.
“No one.” I said. He cocked his head to the side, then smiled and shook it.
“The actual stories are much better.” I explained.
“What do you mean?” He asked, turning to me suddenly.
“The originals.” I said, shrugging “The Grimm brothers and such. You’ve seen my Fairy Tale book.”
“These are in there?” He asked, tapping the case lightly.
“Yeah.” I laughed “Except different.”
“Hmm…” Loki murmured, glancing at me.
“Oh, don’t you get any ideas.” I warned.
“Nothing to worry about, love.” He chuckled, bringing my face to his “I can take care of you and myself.” He kissed me lightly and moved off to the living room.
“That’s debatable.” I breathed.

“I’M HOME!!” I announced to everyone within five miles. This had become a habit of mine, as Loki often wasn’t found on immediate entrance into the house. He usually came fairly quickly when I called, having learned that I usually needed a hug or a kiss coming directly from work. Sometimes he would come so quickly I could swear he teleported.
Except, this time he didn’t come. I hung my keys and glanced around the first few rooms.
“Loki?” I called, opening the door to our bedroom in my inspection. No one was there and I turned away with a sigh. Where the hell was he? I opened the small closet next to the kitchen and took out the broom, hoping to get ahead of the chores while Loki was… out. There was a small envelope taped to the handle.
I blinked, then pulled it off. It was completely unmarked and I opened it hesitantly, hoping it wouldn’t explode in my face or something similar. Loki, after all, was still the god of mischief. Nothing of consequence happened, however, and I pulled out a single piece of paper.
‘The Prince is hosting a Royal Ball. Please refer to the note on your pillow for further instruction.’
I smiled down at the paper. He had done it again. I was going to officially ban princess movies from the house… possibly. I walked back into the bedroom and pulled back the blanket that covered the pillow.
‘There’s a surprise in the closet. Do as instructed.’ Well, that was blunt. I turned and marched over to the closet, pulling back the door quickly. I dearly hope it wasn’t a dragon carcass or talking mice.
I was a table, covered in rose petals, with a few candles on it, and a scarlet bag. There was another note leaning easily against the foremost candle.
‘Your presence is required in the garden at sundown.’ I blinked at it, then glanced up at the bag. He hadn’t mentioned it in his note. I hesitantly put down the note and picked up the bag, opening it gently. I gasped and pulled out the most beautiful dress I had ever seen. It was a mimic of Cinderella’s, but much shorter. I wasn’t poofy (thankfully), but was loose around the bottom. Good for dancing. It also was missing it’s ginormous sleeves and was simply strapless. I instantly made up my mind to kiss him the second I saw him.I was busy admiring it when the bag clinked at my movements. I gently rested the dress on the bed and fished out the next article.
Glass slippers. I laughed breathlessly at the thought: He was playing fairy godmother and the prince. I immediately tried them on. To my surprise, not only did they fit perfectly, they didn’t hurt. Oh, how I was going to make his lisp sore for this. And there was more.
A tiny glass bottle of perfume. I smelled it, then closed my eyes and smiled. It smelt like vanilla. There was an old joke between us that vanilla was the best smell in the nine realms. I hummed softly and rested the bottle on the bedside table.
A necklace, with a thin, silver chain. The charm was a small locket. It wouldn’t open, no matter how much I tried. It’s not like I tried hard, though. I didn’t want to break it.
I smiled down at my appointed wardrobe on the bed and thought about the note. In garden at sundown. In the garden? Our garden was tiny, consisting of a few vines and mint plants. Surely he meant by the garden. But, then again, he had found me a dragon to slay and was always careful with his words.
I scooped up the things on the bed and walked to the bathroom. I had until sundown to get ready, but I sure wasn’t going to waste any time.

I bit my lip nervously and twirled around in the bedroom. The dress had fit perfectly, of course, and I had adorned my throat with the necklace and perfume. I had worn dresses plenty of times, but now, in my glass slippers and other ornaments, I felt different. I felt… well, like a princess. It was slightly nerve wracking. I mean, I’m not a princess.
I drew a deep breath and decided that no harm could come from it. After all, I was doing it for my Prince, so why couldn’t I be a princess, just for tonight?
Just until midnight. I thought with a laugh. I tried to hold my head high and stride out of the room, closing the door softly behind me. My confident demeanor melt as I got closer to the backdoor.
I stepped out of the house and into a dream. There were tons of trees and plants and flowers and shrubs of all kinds scattered around our backyard, which had evidently grown in size. There were a few I could name (in fact, there were Venus Flytraps), but mostly I had no clue what was behind my house. I turned to my right and saw a small fountain bubbling happily with my Prince watching me carefully, sitting on the edge, a soft smile on his lips.
My nervousness flooded me again and I instantly bowed my head down with a blush, biting my lip. I heard him get up and walk over to me.
“Good evening,” he said, pulling my chin up so he could see my face.
“Some ball.” I said with a laugh “There’s no one here.”
“Actually, there’s a perfect turnout.” He replied “Everyone I sent an invitation to came.” I laughed and ducked my head again. He kissed me on the top of my head and tool my hands in his.
“Would you like to dance?” He asked. I nodded enthusiastically and we we’re off, dancing to no music and not to any kind of beat. In truth, though, isn’t that the best way to dance?

“What’s that one?” I asked, pointing at a tree with purple flowers on it. Loki and I had taken to wandering around the garden he had made me, discussing the various things he had put in it. We had decided to take a rest under one of the trees and I was practically sitting in his lap as I leaned against him.
“Truchnut.” He said, wrapping his arms around my waist.
“Does it actually have nuts on it or is another one of those tricky names?”
“Tricky name.” He chuckled.
“Aww, nuts.” I grumbled. He laughed and kissed me on the throat. He hummed softly, then kissed me again… and again… then again.
“Loki!” I giggled, pushing him away slightly.
“Mmm…” he murmured, refusing to stop “you smell so good…”
“Loki!” I laughed “Stop and tell me what this is.” He glanced up, then continued his assault on my neck.
“Fire flower.” He muttered, barely pulling away long enough to utter the words. I gasped and pushed him away, much to his dismay and confusion.
“Fire flower?” I repeated, getting off and turning to face him.
“Yes.” He said “Is something wrong?”
“Well, it’s just that in a book I read there was a plant called Fire Flower and it had magical properties.” I said, a little sheepishly.
“Love, everything here is magic.” He laughed. I blinked at him.
“You mean…” I breathed.
“Of course.” He said, grinning broadly “Why would I get you something useless?”
“You got me this.” I said, gesturing down at my outfit.
“Love, that is not useless.” He purred, his eyes grazing across my form. I smirked at him and practically toppled him over, crashing my lips into his. He gave a surprised gasp, but quickly took control, like usual. It got heated very fast, until Loki gently pushed me away. I blinked at him in surprise and he gave me a wolfish grin.
“Not yet, lovely.” He purred, bopping me lightly on the nose “I still have one more surprise for you.”
“What is it?” I asked.
“You have to wait, love.” He chuckled “You’ll see at–”
“Midnight?” I interrupted. He smirked at me.
“How did you know?” He teased.

“Love, wake up.” I was slowly coming back into the real world, Loki gently stroking my cheek. We had lapsed into silence and apparently I had fallen asleep on his shoulder.
“Love,” He chuckled “it’s almost time.”
“In Cinderella everything disappeared at midnight.” I muttered sleepily, pushing myself up.
“I promise it won’t disappear.” He laughed “Look up.” He gently tilted my chin upwards towards the low branches of the tree. It was a lot like a weeping willow; the feathery, soft leave seeming to be about to drip off the stems. Several tiny buds covered the branches, each of them a different color. I looked for a while then glanced at him.
“What?” I asked.
“Just wait.” He purred “Patience.” I turned my attention back to the tree.
“So, what’s magical about this tree?” I asked.
“It gives good luck,” He chuckled “but only if you know what to do.”
“What do you do?” I asked, making sure to keep my face upwards.
“It’s simple really,” He said, laying back in the grass “but you have to wait until midnight, love.” I sighed in fake exasperation and he laughed.
“Don’t worry, love.” He said “It’s soon. So very close.” I looked at the tree for a few more seconds, then gasped.
The tree exploded. Well, not exactly exploded, as it all happened really slowly. The buds opened up into tiny, glowing flowers and detached themselves from the tree. The floated gently down, landing on the grass, Loki, me. It smelled wonderful and lit up the area around up with thousands of tiny, colorful lights. I laughed out loud and caught a few on my hand.
“Come, love, there isn’t much time left.” I looked at him. He had one arm held out to me, asking me to come forward. I leaned over him.
“What do I do?” I asked, making him smile mischievously.
“You truly don’t know?” He asked. I shook my head and he entangled his fingers in my hair.
“You’re silly.” He laughed and brought my head down into a gentle kiss. He brushed my hair back, then slowly released me. My eyelids fluttered open to see him grinning. The lights were gone and I looked around, confused.
“Where’d they go?” I asked, slightly upset.
“Love, that only happens at midnight.” He said gently, still playing with my hair “It’s past midnight now.” I looked around at the surplus of flowers around me, already dulling of their color.
“It only lasts a minute?” I asked mournfully.
“Yes, love,” He replied “that’s what makes it so special.”
“Oh, and the good luck?” I asked “Did we miss it?”
“A magic kiss under the Drogund Tree, And luck for a year, yours shall be.” He quoted “We didn’t miss it.”
“Magic kiss?” I asked “But how do you know–”
“Love, every time two people kiss there is some element of magic.” He said softly “But a truly magic kiss simply occurs when the two both wholeheartedly enjoy and want the kiss. A kiss that both revel in and forget the rest of the world. Simple as that.” He snapped his fingers, sending green sparks flying into the grass.
“Simple as that?” I teased.
“Well, we don’t seem to have any problem with it.” He chuckled.
“But you have so much more magic than me.” I laughed.
“True.” He purred “And now watch as I make your dress disappear.”
