I shake my head. "I can't. To get off, you need the boat. It only appears when..."
He gives a dry laugh. "When you fall in love with me." He stops. "So?"
I cross my arms and start to back away, shaking my head. "I don't love you. I'm sorry."
He tilts his head as if in thought. "What was it you said Odysseus did?"
I shudder and take another step, not daring to run and not wanting to answer.
"Oh, that's right. He just waited it out." He stops and sighs. "I would really rather not wait very long, but hey. Odysseus obviously waited awhile, and he still got back to the real world in a time when all of his family was still alive." He smirks. "So."
The smirk on his face is the total opposite of Leo's cheeky, confident grin.
I don't know what else to do.
I run.
Footsteps thud behind me, kicking up sand. I run harder. If I can just get to my cave...
It doesn't matter. I'm stuck on this island anyway. Why is he even chasing me?
In that split-second moment of hesitation, I trip. Jake's arms grab me around the waist. I kick at him uselessly.
His breath is hot on my ear. "Now, now. No need to run. You'll ruin your pretty dress."
I shudder and try to break away, but it's useless.
"Let me go," I growl.
To my total surprise, he does.
"I'm not stupid, Calypso. I'll let you go. You have five nights. Then I'll be back."
I crumple to the ground as he stalks off and vanishes into the woods.
Five nights.
