Punctuation (Part One)
Here are the types of punctuation and some example sentences:! = exclamation point. It is used when someone is shouting or emphasizing something. "Ouch!" I said.
? = question mark. It is used when someone is asking a question. "Who are you?" I asked.
. = period. It is used when someone is saying something normally, without any emphasis or questions. "I love you." I said.
... = ellipsis. It is used when someone trails off while saying something. "I didn't know that..." I whispered.
: = colon. It is used when someone is about to say something that relates to the first part of a sentence. "I bought three things at the store: eggs, bread, and milk." Mom said.
, = comma. It is used when someone is listing things. "You are very caring, loving, and empathetic." I said.
; = semicolon. It is used instead of a period to separate two sentences. "I brought extra batteries this time; I wasn't taking any chances." said Joe.
' = apostrophe. *see chapters 1-3*
" = quotation marks. They are used when someone is saying something. "I can't believe it!" I said.
/ = slash. They are used instead of the words 'and' or 'or.' "Write your name, first/last, please."
() = parentheses. They are used when someone is saying or mentioning someone. "I'm not surprised (Harry has done this before), but you should know better!"
- = hyphen. It is used instead of a colon. "I can't understand why you'd do this - you know better!"
