Chapter 2: Alone Together
All the night guards had left the pizzeria and walked towards their houses. Vincent grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the safe room. I didn’t resist and Vincent smiled. We got to the safe room and Vincent pulled me inside and locked the door behind him. My wings twitched nervously. Vincent pushed me towards the wall with such force I almost fell. I opened my eyes and Vincent was right in my face.“I saw the look on your face when you first lay your eyes on me,” he smiled with satisfaction, “that’s the look of love.” Vincent’s grin widened. I was glad it was dark in the room because I blushed so much when he said that.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“I mean, I know you love me.”
“WHAT?! NO! What’s the time? How long have we been in here?”
“It’s almost 3 pm so we’ve been in he- Vincent was cut off from the sound of the rattling door handle.
“Hello? Hello?” It was Scott, “I heard your voices. Open up!”
Vincent pushed me into the corner and unlocked the door.
“Vincent, what are you doing? Where’s my sister?” Scott demanded.
I stood up and walked to the door. “What are you doing here Scott?”
“Vicky! Are you OK? Tell me you’re OK!”
“I’m fine, Scott. Does he usually do that?”
“Ever wonder why there are no females?”
There was an awkward atmosphere and everyone was silent.
“Well we should be heading off now…” Scott said.
I walked towards the door, Vincent’s smile still hanging on the edge of my mind. I was so tired I almost fell asleep right there and then. I felt a hand on my shoulder.
“We need to talk,” Scott said to me.
. . .
“He only wanted to talk to me,” I said to Scott.
“Is that true?” Scott asked
“Yes, just let me sleep.”
“Okay.”
I walked over to my bed and lay down. All I could think about was Vincent’s smile and his unnaturally white eyes. I could have sworn I saw them glow and flicker to black then back to white. I heard Scott on the phone outside my door.
“I won’t be surprised if she stays home tomorrow,” Scott said. The phone was on speaker and I heard the unmistakable voice of Vincent.
“She loves me. She won’t stay home,” Vincent replied.
“The way you talk about her makes me think you love her.”
“Hehehe. You got me. But don’t let anyone know…Not even her.”
“Got it.” Scott hung up, started laughing and opened my door. I closed my eyes quickly.
“I know you’re awake, Vicky.” I opened my eyes and looked at him.
“Do you think he actually loves me? Or did he just say that so you weren’t suspicious about it?” I asked.
“I think he loves you.”
“Is that why you guys were staring at him? When he made that kind gesture towards me?”
“Yes.”
