Mangled Friendship
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Rett wasn’t listening as he kept a close watch on the cameras. “He’s screwing with us..He was in the main party room and now he’s back in the back room.” Asher looked over his shoulders trying to see what the hell was going on. “Who’s screwing with us? Robbers?” Rett finally looked back at him grinning maniacally. “The animatronics”That grin put him on edge more than the fact he said Animatronics. “W-what? The robots?” All he got was a nod from Rett as he looked between the cameras. “It’s bonnie. Damn that rabbit.” Asher touched his right inside pocket where he hid his gun. “So, you’re telling me that those robots are moving on their own right now? Don’t they turn off?” “Keep up will ya? Otherwise yer gonna be dead like Mike” Rett growled checking the doors. “Mike!? Dead!? What the F*** is going on here! You mean these things are gonna kill us? And they go around kids?” Asher’s voice cracked and screeched.
This job was turning into a nightmare very quickly. He didn’t want any part of this what so ever. He grabbed Rett’s shoulders. “YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW!!” Ash screamed at him. Rett sighed, “The animatronics are fine during the day, but at night they become possessed and try to come into the office. No one knows really why they do, but they always come after the guards. Some think it’s cause they glitch out and try to find noise.”
Ash stood there still gripping his shoulders, judging if what he said could be true. “And what do you believe Rett?” Rett looked off to the side, “I thought it was Jeremy being an ass at first but when I asked him, he completely flipped out and looked spooked.” “And now?” Ash egged on, needing to know what he thought of this. “Now…I think it’s true that they become possessed.”
He couldn’t believe it, Ash froze in place. Rett looked at the doors before returning his gaze back on Asher. “You think I’m nuts don’t you?” A screech broke their conversation as they whipped their gazes to the left door. “That’s foxy! Run!” Rett screamed grabbing Ash’s arm and running full speed.
“Whaaa!? You just said Bonnie. They all move??!” Ash hollered trying to keep up with Rett’s frantic gallop. Rett turned left and threw Ash into a dark corner clapping his hand over Ash’s mouth, his eyes peeled for the animatronic as he edged closer to Ash in the darkness. Both of their eyes widened as the heavy metallic running came closer. It wasn’t long before they saw the red metal beast run past them unknowingly. Rett let his hand slip and braced himself against the wall with it, letting a breath out slowly. Ash felt his heart pound in his chest, he was honestly afraid for his life.
Being in the army was one thing, but dealing with possessed robots was another. “Rett…” He whispered. Ash furrowed his eyebrows when Rett didn’t look up, so he touched his shoulder lightly getting his attention. As Rett looked up, Ash swore he saw his purple eyes flicker yellow for a second. “Are you ok?” Ash asked, Rett shook his head no. “They still spook me to this day.” Ash felt his fear in his words. “You do this alone?” He got a nod in return from Rett. It was hard to know that Rett was running from these beasts every night he worked here.
The company wouldn’t have believed them, nor would take their safety into account because it would cost them thousands of dollars. “I’m assuming we can’t smash them to bits huh?” Rett smirked at him, “You got 5 million?” Ash chuckled quietly, “pfftt.. I wish. If I did, I wouldn’t be in this hell hole.” He had to agree with Asher’s logic there. “Welcome to the brigade soldier.” Rett jeered. Asher grinned at that comment. How appropriate.
“We should make ourselves matching dog tags.” Ash replied watching that smile creep across Rett’s face again. “I take it you’ll stick around this madness?” He asked watching Ash’s face for any deceit. “Ya, I’ve been through worse. I think I can handle some crazed robots. They don’t got missile launcher or tanks.”
Rett started to laugh, he tried to cover his mouth. A large purple hand gripped his elbow, making both of them scream. “Bonnie!” Rett yelled trying to pry his arm away from Bonnie the rabbit. The sheer size of the rabbit animatronic was frightening let alone its glowing eyes.
Asher’s fighting instincts kicked in for his fellow guard as he kicked the robot back. Bonnie lost his grip on Rett, allowing for him to sprint away. “Come on Ash!” Ash was pissed, he watched the rabbit recover and lunge at him. Asher grinned and ducked between its legs and behind it, swinging his leg around and tripping the robot. “Take that asshole!” He yelled leaping over the mass and after Rett.
The hallways were confusing and dark. They could hear the screeching of another animatronic. Rett pinned it automatically. “Shit!! Mangle!” That one Ash didn’t know. “Mangle? What the hell is a Mangle?” He wasn’t sure he wanted to know an answer.
They slipped into the kitchen, hiding behind the island. Ash’s leg was severely throbbing. Tripping a 200 pound robot was probably a stupid move. Rett looked to his new buddy realizing that he was saved because of him. “Why’d you do that? You could have ran away and saved yourself.” Ash scoffed, “Oh ya? And go where? I don’t know anything about these guys. You do. Besides, it’s not my style to leave people behind in the lines. We’ll survive better if we stick it out together.” Rett looked in disbelief at Asher. Ash wasn’t sure if Rett was in shock or what. It was like he never had someone become his friend or show him kindness. “Are you gonna be alright?”
Rett looked at the floor hiding his face under his hat. “Ya.” Ash didn’t know what to say, so he put his hand on Rett’s back as they sat quietly. It was the most awkward bond friendship thing. A rustle in the next room caught their attention as they leaned back against the cupboards. “Who is it?” Rett couldn’t make out the sounds…both Chica and Freddy liked the kitchen…but they others were known to sometimes come this way too. Ash hated this waiting game so he scrambled to his feet and peered over the counter. A pair of eyes met his as two large hands gripped the sides of his head. “AHHH!!!” The large bear known as Freddy picked him up by his head. Ash struggled kicking and flailing about. “Let go of me you crazy bear!”
Freddy turned his head grinning at him, Rett knew what was going to happen and used his knife to slash at the animatronic’s hand. Freddy dropped Ash screeching at Rett. Now pissed Ash punched Freddy under the jaw and sent him stumbling backwards. They ran out of the kitchen, into the dining room. Ash’s hand felt wet and severely broken. “F***…I think I broke my hand…” Rett shined his flashlight on Ash’s hand, it was covered in blood. “Oh shit…you did I think.” Shoving the flash light in his mouth, he took out a handkerchief and wrapped it around his hand. “That will help till the shift ends.” Ash smiled at him, “Thanks man.”
Rett looked around shining his flash light. “Looks like we’re alone for now.” Ash looked at his watch, it read 3: 23am. “God dammit! It’s only 3:23….” Rett groaned, tonight seemed to drag on. He looked around again, knowing that one of the robots were gonna find them. Ash looked to the right pressing his back against Rett’s pulling out his gun. “F*** them, I won’t shoot them directly unless if I have to. Screw the company.” Rett turned to him, “Why do you have a gun??” Asher laughed out loud, “Why do you have a knife?” That made him quiet before he said, “Touche.” Ash grinned pulling out his flashlight and holding it over his gun waiting for the robots to come from the restrooms or the east hall. Rett watched the backroom and the west hall. Neither said anything about the other shaking since both were frightened from the whole ordeal. The fact that they were united by their resolution to survive together made it bearable.
“Hey.” Ash whispered. “What?” “As a first impression…how long did you think I was going to last?” Rett chuckled, “Do you really wanna know the answer to that?” “Well, I think I’m entitled since you dragged me into a death trap.” Rett couldn’t argue against that, “Fine. Honestly, only a night whether they killed you or you survived and quit the next day.” Snickering, Ash then asked, “Ok. And now?” Rett leaned his head back onto Ash’s shoulders. “I’m glad you’re with me…you’re strong and a stubborn ass just like me.” That made Ash feel triumphant and a bit happy. “So you admit you’re an ass?” He joked, winning laughter from Rett.
Their laughter was cut off by a table being flipped over. Both shined their flashlight over to it. The table was near the stage. “Was someone there?” Ash asked Rett, looking at him. Rett’s face was pale. “No…it was just us in here….unless….” Rett shined his light above them suddenly. Ash looked up too, and screamed. “WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!!!??”
