Suitor: Margaret
MARGARET'S POVI shiver and rub my hands against my arms. The frigid breeze bites my fingers. Cristiana squeezes breathes on her hands to warm them. "So, what's going on?" I ask.
We're at Cinder Cliffs, abandoned now that Ryia isn't climbing it. I lean against the cold stone and examine my fingernails. Cristiana is hopping impatiently from foot to foot. I don't know exactly why she's agitated.
"It's about what happened yesterday," Leo says.
"With the necklace?" I tease, crossing my arms and grinning.
Leo blushes up to his ears. Cristiana giggles.
“No… Well, yes. But it’s not a necklace. It’s just a… charm.” Leo explains.
Peter furrows his eyebrows. "What does it do?"
Shrugging, Leo replies, "I'm not sure, but Hadrian said I needed to wear it..."
I have to clap a hand over my mouth to keep from laughing out loud. Father would be appalled at a boy wearing a necklace! Out of the corner of my eye, I see Cristiana trying not to burst out laughing. Fred and Peter are smirking, too.
"Anyways, it's about dragons," Leo tells us. He looks so serious. But dragons aren't real. They are only a thing of stories. That Hadrian is putting ideas in Leo's mind that shouldn't ought to be there. I guffaw before I can stop myself.
Evelyn, after being quiet all this time, softly says, "Leonardo, dragons are extinct." She seems like she's talking to a small child. I can't say I blame her.
Leo shakes his head furtively. "No, they're not. I can show you."
All of a sudden, a woman intrudes. She's wearing a thin pink dress and her brown hair is tied up with a ribbon. It's Evelyn' mother! I recognize the thin features. I've never seen her this dressed up.
"Evelyn! Come with me, now! You've ruined your dress! We have company!" the woman exclaims, grabbing Evelyn by the hand and dragging her away. Evelyn squeezes her eyes shut, like she's trying not to see the reality. I don't know what's so horrid about Evelyn's 'company,' but Evelyn faces every challenge with a smile, so this must be terrible.
"Who was that?" asks Leo.
"Her mom," I grumble, crossing my arms. "She's awfully strict."
Leo nods in agreement.
Suddenly, Cristiana pipes up. "What's that?" She points to a cave opening, a little ways down from where we're standing.
"I don't know," Leo says.
"Let's go check it out, then," says Cristiana, taking off toward it. Leo attempts to follow her, but he never gets out much. Within moments, Cristiana is at the mouth of the cave, and Leo is panting.
When we all reach it, I see a torch placed against one wall. It's quite dark, but the torch dimly lights the area.
Cristiana's eyes burn with excitement. "Let's go." she says, sprinting in.
