Chapter Social Casualty
I just stare up at Luke. He stares down at me. We both burst out laughing at the same time. We've done stuff like this for years, but only now it becomes special.I feel our hands intertwine, and then we're walking back to the party.
Lina is standing by the door, talking to someone. She sees us, and is about to say something, but she must notice us holding hands, the way I'm leaning against Luke, and the grin he has on his face. So Lina just smiles, and says, "I knew you two would end up together someday! I knew it since you first moved here, Lauren. It was pretty obvious that Luke liked you!" "Really?" I say. "I only noticed it now!" Lina laughs and shakes her head.
I pull Luke through the gradually thinning crowd, trying to find my friends. Then I see them - but Ashton's there too. "Luke," I whisper urgently. "What is it?" he asks, concerned. "Ashton!"
Luke's eyes widen. "Oh, no," he breathes. And Ashton has seen us, and he is coming this way. I can hardly breathe.
"Hi, guys!" he grins. And I nearly start to cry, because I can't believe that I am going to hurt him. The boy who secretly looked at me when I went to his band practises. The boy who comforted me earlier when I thought that Luke had ended our friendship eternally. The boy who I have replaced with his best friend.
I look up at Luke, and run up to my room. I can't do this to Ashton.
About half an hour later, someone knocks on my door. "Who is it?" I ask. "It's us," I hear Amethyst's voice reply. "Okay, come in," I sigh.
Lydia, Libby, Dawn and Amethyst enter the room. They sit down on the floor. "So, do you want the good news or bad news first?" Dawn asks. "Good news," I answer. Lydia smiles. "Well, we're so happy that you and Luke are together!" she tells me. I smile slightly. "But you really don't want to go downstairs," Libby says seriously. "Yeah, Ashton is so mad!" Amethyst adds. "What? Tell me more!" I exclaim. The girls exchange glances. "Um..." Lydia starts to say, when the door opens, and Lina comes in.
"Lauren, you really need to come down," she tells me. I get up, and follow her downstairs quickly.
Most of the guests have left, and my parents must be at someone else's house, because Luke, Calum, Michael and Ashton are the only ones left.
Calum looks like he's trying to calm Luke down, and Michael is doing the same with Ashton, but both Luke and Ashton are shouting at the boys. I bite my lip. I think this is all my fault.
Calum looks towards the door, and he sees me. He says something to Luke, and he quickly looks in my direction. He shouts something to Calum. Calum asks him something and Luke nods desperately. Calum rolls his eyes, and lets go of Luke.
Luke runs over to me and hugs me. "This is my fault, isn't it?" I whisper. Luke shakes his head. "No, of course not...but I think we might have a problem here." He nods to Ashton, who is still arguing with Michael.
I sigh. "I-I'm sorry, Luke..." "No, it's okay, Lauren," he tells me. "We'll sort it out."
For once, I think Luke might not be right.
"Luke!" Lina calls, coming down. "We were meant to be home five minutes ago!" Luke rolls his eyes. "Get Lydia and we'll go," he tells her.
Then he turns back to me. "I'll see you tomorrow, Lauren," he smiles. "Thank you for the best day of my life." "It was the best day of your life? Even after the way it started?" "Almost anything could have happened, and it would still be the best day of my life," he admits.
Lydia and Lina come down the stairs and stand by the front door. "Come on, Luke!" Lydia sighs impatiently. "You'll see Lauren tomorrow!" "You don't understand, Lydia," Luke tells her. "I don't care!" Lydia groans. "Just hurry up!"
Luke just laughs. "I love you, Lauren," he says softly. "I love you too," I whisper back. Luke smiles, and follows his sisters out of the house.
I glance back at the three boys. Michael and Ashton are still yelling at each other. I catch Calum's eye. He nods to the stairs, silently telling me to go up. He glances at Ashton and Michael, and then back to me. I nod, understanding, and run up to my room. Calum was telling me to go up, because the fight might get a bit physical. And he understands that there's no way I want to see that.
I lie on my bed, looking up at the ceiling. I should be happy. I should be grateful that Luke loves me, and I love him. But I'm just worried about what will happen between Luke and Ashton. And that it will be my fault.
I can understand why Ashton is angry. It was awful of me to do that to him. But if he really cared about me, he would be happy. He would be happy that I've found someone who genuinely loves me. But he's not.
After a while - it could have been five minutes, it could have been an hour - I decide to open the door, and go out. I haven't hears any arguing for a few minutes. It should be okay.
I am starting down the stairs when I hear someone's voice behind me. "So you've finally decided to come out?" Ashton says. "Obviously," I laugh. "You think this is funny?" he says angrily, coming closer to me. I begin to back away, terrified. "I actually thought you liked me," he tells me, continuing to come closer, as I continue to back away. "I-I do!" I say. Ashton laughs coldly. "Yeah, sure," he says. "I do like you, Ashton," I say desperately. "It's just that - "
But I don't get to finish my sentence, because he pushes me down the stairs. I hit my head on a step and bang my arm on another. I curl up on the floor, sobbing, as Calum rushes over to me, Michael following him.
"Lauren - I didn't mean - " Ashton gasps, shocked at what he did. He tries to come over to me, but Michael pushes him away. "You're not going anywhere near her," he snarls.
"It hurts so much, Calum," I sob quietly. "I know it does, Lauren," Calum says softly. "We'll bring you to a hospital and it'll all be okay."
I start to cry harder as Calum lifts me up gently and carries me into Michael's car as Michael drives us to the hospital. I lie in the backseat with my head on Calum's chest as we speed past the few cars that are left on the road at this time. Calum strokes my hair and comforts me, kissing my head and telling me that everything will be okay, as I close my eyes and fall asleep listening to his heartbeat.
