Chapter Beside You
"We wrote a new song, Lauren!" he tells me excitedly, like a five-year-old would tell you that he learned the alphabet.
"Really?" I grin. "Can I hear it?" The question is actually directed at Luke.
Luke nods. "It's not very good so far," he tries to warn me. "We only have the first verse and chorus written and - " "Luke!" I cut him off. "I'm sure it's amazing."
Luke smiles and glances at the other three. They nod at him. He calls, "One, two, three, four!" And they start to play. Luke looks at me, and he starts to sing.
You call me up,
It's like a broken record
Saying that your heart hurts
That you'll never get over him getting over you,
And you end up crying
And I end up lying,
'Cause I'm just a sucker for anything that you do
And when the phone call finally ends,
You say, "Thanks for being a friend."
I'm going in circles again and again
I dedicate this song to you,
The one who never sees the truth,
That I can take away your hurt,
Heartbreak girl.
Hold you tight straight through the daylight,
I'm right here,
When you gonna realize
That I'm your cure, heartbreak girl?
I start clapping instantly. I loved the song - but there's something strange. The line, 'And when the phone call finally ends, you say, "Thanks for being a friend." '
I said that at the end of one of my phone calls to Luke about Nathan once.
I ignore the suspicion. Luke probably just liked that sentence. And the fact that he was looking at me during the whole song means nothing...
"It's not very good so far," Luke says quickly. "We need to work on it." "No, it's amazing!" I say eagerly, and I mean it.
All of the boys grin. "Thanks, Lauren!" they all say.
Luke is smiling the brightest. But then a more serious look replaces his grin. "Now, Lauren," he says. "You never showed me that text."
I bite my lip. I can feel the tears coming. I throw my phone at him and run up the stairs to Lydia's room. I burst in.
Lydia is on her phone. She looks up. "Oh, hi, Lauren!" she says brightly. I brush away a tear before she can see it. I will not cry. I will not cry.
"So, why have you come here?" Lydia asks. "Their playing is awful, isn't it?" "No, it's not that at all!" I say quickly. "I just wanted to hang out with my best friend!"
Lydia smiles. She's about to say something, when her bedroom door is flung open. "Get out of here!" she shrieks when she sees Calum. He ignores her. "Lauren," he says breathlessly. "Luke wants to talk to you."
I follow Calum as he races down the stairs and into the room where the rest of the boys are.
Luke throws his arms around me when I enter. "I'm so sorry," he mutters into my hair. "I can't believe you were with him." "Neither can I," I sigh.
I look up and glance around at Michael, Calum and Ashton. It looks like Ashton wants to hug me too, but is deciding against it. I smile at him, and he smiles back. That's when I realise that Ashton is quite good-looking. I'm glad that he gave me his phone number.
