Be kind
"Pub?” Sapphire still offers. Surge looks shaken, the light in his eyes wavering, but he manages a shaky“Yeah”. Negro doesn’t catch them this time and they have their meal in peace. “So, I’ve got a question," Surge starts. Sapphire wipes their hand on a napkin and listens. “Do you think…that we could all be kind?” He’s staring at his empty tray now. “That Slarus could be kind if we got to Mobius?” Sapphire smiles, a genuine one, and nods.
“Yes.”
“I’m tellin’ you, this may not be a bad thing.”
“I’ll tell you what’s a bad thing!” The group hears Negro and Surge through the blizzard before they see them.
“That’s new,” Jackie mutters.
“You making friends with the enemy!” The group walks around the corner to see Negro jabbing a hand into Surge’s chest. He staggers backwards, but takes a step back to steady himself and holds his ground.
“I am not making friends. I am saying we should think this through,” he says. His partner laughs,
"You can’t think, Surge. All you do all day is sit in your post and be useless.”
“That’s enough, Negro,” Surge growls.
“Oh look, he knows how to talk back!”
“They’re fighting?” Maria whispers and turns to the rest of the group, "Maybe we can run-” Sapphire shakes her head.
“Negro will notice,” she says, “Not yet. If I die again, I might go blind and I don't want to risk it...” Surge and Negro are still yelling at each other. When they notice the group, Negro grins.
“Speak of the devils." He summons his magic to attack to Sapphire. She has somehow become the 'favourite' of the two, she can't tell if it's a good thing or bad though. Sapphire swallows, but then Surge marches over towards her. The magic disappears. “What are you doing?”
“To spite and show you that I am not useless,” Surge grabs Sapphires good arm and the girl flinches on instinct, “I’m taking her to the King, all of them.” The friends freeze. A deep growl rumbles in Negro's throat,
“No.”
“Watch me,” Surge bites back. The ground pulls out from beneath them and Sapphire stumbles back. The others try to steady themselves as light explodes around them in one second and disappears in the next.
When they blink, they’re in front of a sentry station similar to one near the town. Sapphire nearly falls back and Surge grabs their sleeve of their other arm to steady them.
“You alright there, darlin'?” Sapphire pulls away quickly. Surge lets them go and holds up his hands
"Easy there.”
“Y-you…” she takes a deep breath “You’re taking us to the King?” The others growl and get into their fighting stances to defend if need be. The demon hedgehog spares them an apologetic glance, but looks back to Sapphire.
“Would you believe me if I said I lied to my partner, darlin'?” he asks. She frowns,
“Why-”
“He was going to kill you,” he says, “Had to make use of what I had and get you out of there. Don’t think he’s going to chase us now except for if he wants to murder me.” He laughs, “I reckon he’s always wanted to do that, but I don’t go down easy.”
“Unbelievable,” Calista breathes. Sapphire frowns further,
“You…” she looks at his held up hands and the expression on his face. “You’re helping us?"
“You said you believed that everyone of us could be kind, right?” he shrugs like he always does, “I’m trying.”
"What did you say to him?" Crimson questions eyeing Surge suspiciously. Sapphire also shrugs just as confused. Surge slowly lowers his hands and holds one out. Sapphire eyes it warily. After looking to her friends for advise who give her encouraging glances Sapphire holds the left hand out and put it in Surge's. He wraps his fingers around their flower sketched-covered ones and starts walking towards what looks to be a waterfall. They did it. They got past Negro.
