One Week
In one week, I will have my third Change. I have one more week of being Anders Love.Someone comes up behind me in the schoolyard and hugs me. I turn around. It was Jaena. For the last five years, we've been very close. She still has one more month, but I know she is devastated to see me go.
"Anders," she started to tear up,"I don't want to see you go. I can't bear the though of not seeing you everyday. You won't even remember me! In a month, our whole friendship will be forgotten!" She was now crying. "I hate how Changes break up friendships and families. Anders, we don't even know who our parents are. Think about a little girl about to have her first Change. She wouldn't even remember her parents, if they were even there. I might was well become Nameless."
I gasped. "Jaena, don't say that! You know I'm upset too, but it's what the Government says, and unfortunately, what they say is word."
Jaena sniffed. "Yeah I know, I just hate the way it is. Anyway, have you picked your new name?" she asked.
I had almost forgotten. You were able to choose your own name. I was thinking of something a little "earthy," like Tree, Rose, or River. Many people chose flashy, and high class names, like Diamond, Princess, or Rainbow. People also got very silly with names, which was very irritating because I have at least three Watchapoo's, or Zebraface's in my class. And yes, that is not a lie. People about to have their second Change are not very original with their humor.
"I was thinking maybe Tree. Or is that too stupid?" I asked.
"Hmm.. I think it fits you, but it does sound a bit off. I have some suggestions like, Jaena, to remember me, Love, to remember your old life. Maybe Nina or Daysie because those are nice names. But, I also like Michelle, Zoe, Taylor, and other names from the Ancient Years, since those are getting really popular lately. As for last names, I think you should use something earthy for that instead, just a thought."
I analysed all that she said. "I really like some of those. I'll think about it, though."
A bell rung, marking the end of the school day. I didn't have to report back to the county Caretakers until 18:00. So, I knew exactly where to go.
